Why not just climb up and over at a fence post ?

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

If they make the fence right and secure it properly the posts should be impossible to grab on.

Frpm the description... this fence sounds pretty shoddy really. If the fence is like the one he described as having jumped over, this doesn't seem to be a highly secure, well designed fence...

The fence I was refferring to earlier was indeed a poorly designed, basic perimeter fence with the outward angled barbed wire across the top more as a decoration than a deterrent. It was at a site which was soon being cleared to make way for a park, so cutting the fence in places wouldn't make a difference to anyone. I should have clarified that. The "censored" part is annoying I know, but it's a work in progress and it is very active. If you must know, a local bomb squad has a hand in the place. There is no cutting fences going on there I assure you...

We haven't decided to try out the rubber tube idea, but went out last nite and used the step on/ pull up method and then just squeezed through. Only problem is the wire makes loud TWANGing soundswhen you do this. Anyone have any ideas about avoiding the noise? Probly a stupid question but...

that sounds like the fences my parents had around their 45 acres of woods before they moved into town... if you're not in a rush and you don't mind getting dirty, the best way to go through without making noise is to just slide under the bottom strand if it's high enough off the ground.

otherwise, try either pulling really slowly or else having someone hold the wire further down the fence (a segment or two) so it doesn't vibrate as much.

I used this to get to a factory, and I took a shortcut through a forest to get to the factory (also for a touch of stealth). Problem being is I dropped to the ground in front of the fence and what is in front of me? Poison Ivy, just before my nose. I'm actually getting used to having to work around the stuff so I slowly made it under being careful to avoid any three leaf plants on open skin. A careful change of clothes and a hot water bath, and luckily I had nothing to show for it.

Very strong cardboard would be required for that I imagine. Razor wire is lethal. You need a liscense just to put that stuff up.

Razor wire isnt as bad as it looks. Its used mainly for intimidation purposes.

Why not go down to the local Value Village or Salvation Army, or raid dad's boxed clothes and get a heavy coat, say a thick jean jacket, and use that to throw over the barbed wire? Jean jackets are tough and tear resistant, and you would look oh so cool while wearing it until you need it. Razor wire might cut through the fabric though. I haven't tried the jacket method but it's a suggestion.

Hm... I've never had to climb a barbed wire fence, but if I did, I'd be inclined to bring along a thick blanket or something to drape over it... maybe a rubber mat or something? Anyone done that?

good old leather jacket always works for me....and its easy to carry, just wear the damn thing

When I did a tour in an Infantry company we used to string concertina wire. That stuff will cut you to pieces. The only gloves that we could use were very heavy leather welding gloves as the wire would slice through rubber and regular leather gloves like paper.

You could always put a pair in a back pack as they don't take up all that much space.

I have on occasion packed a set of these around in my bag, ordered em from US Cav and they make a nice easy way to go up and over.

Okay, I haven't had to negotiate barbed wire, so I'm just going to say what seems reasonable.

Obviously, check the whole perimeter for gaps in the barbed wire, hole in the fence, or under it. The only two places I'm looking at getting into have a gap in the wire and a gate with no wire over it. Easy stuff then.

Otherwise, I'ld use a combination of a thick mat and some kevlar leather gloves...

What are they? How do they work?

They can be found here:
http://www.elitetacticalsources.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=BHDE-TFC

Description from site:
Tactical Fence Climbers by Dynamic Entry.
If you have ever tried to hop a fence with a fifty pound ram on your shoulder and 40lbs of body armor, you will not leave home without these. They poke thru chain link fences, and provide steps on the way up and even more brilliantly, on the way back down. Steel nubby doodads at the base prevent the step from moving laterally. A must for any tactical op. Steel, lasts forever, supports the biggest, baddest member of any assault team.

great description, I must say, especialy the Steel nubby doodads part...

Ok there are a few ideas, 1. the car mat thing, or the thick outdoor mat from public buildings idea works generally good, 2, if its just a horizontally strung fence that you can pry and squeeze through, climb at a fence post, one foot on either side, so that you are straining the staple/tack rather then stretching the wire... 3, I used to spend lots of time on a farm, thick welding gloves work great for the final peak of the fence and the tip over, but if you really REALLY want up something, with some practice, some steel shank work boots, and a pair of hay hooks, you can make decent time, if you live near any agriculture stores you can buy bale hooks, sure they are a bit more conspicous then most prefer, but they are handy steel hooks with wood/plastic handles, they never die, and are cheap, http://www.benmeadows.com/store/product_group.asp?dept_id=1535 you can even make em with a welder and a few minutes if needed, or something more task specific, im just planning on making a set of chain link cleats if i get time

~pure lazyness but alot easier if your carrying a bag and dont wanna toss the bag first incase ya cant get over to get it... and yes.. i have seen a guy do that... it was very... very.. sad.~

But if you got some scrap steel a welder and a few minutes, a horizontal handle with 2 hooks mounted on either end of it and a bar going down to keep it from twisting, are a handy addition to a fense climbers bag,
