Quarry Lake Dam (Halifax)

Hope this isn't too far off topic for a UE site.

I recently had cause to explore the Birch Cove Lakes area. If you were driving into Halifax on the 102, you would pass this big area of wilderness on the right hand side just before you passed Bayers Lake Business Park. There is a large and obvious quarry, and also many lakes.

The water from Suzie Lake (popular skinny-dipping spot) flows into Quarry Lake where there is a dam. From here it goes into Washmill Lake, then Kearney Lake, then Papermill Lake in Bedford, and then finally into the Bedford Basin at Moirs Mill. The system of dams is very old, and was originally built and maintained by the paper companies, but for a long time no maintenance was done. The consequences of a dam failure could have been quite severe to the people who live alongside these lakes and streams. In 2005 HRM figured out who actually owned the dams and got the whole mess sorted out. They're rebuilding all of the dams basically from the ground up, because they come nowhere near meeting modern safety standards.

The Quarry Lake dam was the first to be rebuild because it was in such poor condition. Here's the location:

There is an access road to get to the dam from the quarry, but it's been (quite effectively) blocked off. Still I think I would approach from that side if I went back; the way I went was a hard scramble through thick roots and bushes, and I got lost going back ;)

Still, here it is, the new 2005 dam.

I didn't even know there were dams out there in the first place

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.

Nice!

http://cat.org.au/~predator/approach.txt

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...
