| | | I carry around a bright blue LED light from Brookstone and a bright white Garrity flashlight all the time, and then pack a red LED light, regular Maglites (I have two 2AAs and two 4Ds), a Pelican light or a Petzl headlamp for special situations or as loaners for friends. They're all good, and I almost always make sure I take at least two. I also carry little glowsticks in my wallet. I don't have anything in the portable sun range, but then I probably wouldn't use it much. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | Every light I use is an LED of some sort... Depending on where i'm planning on going I'll favour different ones. Seems my most often used is my Energizer headlamp (2white focused LED's, or 1 red LED) because it's multipurpose... One thing I happened to get thats pretty handy for carrying a light that doesn't look like a light, is a Pen (strangely enough, given out to employees as a novelty at my work) that has a pretty strong Blue LED in it. It's meant to light the lower half of the pen up *fancy*, but if I unscrew the lower part, the led is basically a small flashlight. I carry that pen everywhere now so I always have a light (and a pen)...

| | | My petzl Myo-3 headlamp is great. 4 hours of focusable xenon light, or 100 or so hours of 3-led light run off of 4 AA's, which is the same as I use for my camera, so I can just bring a bunch for either. For a while, the battery holder thing that rests on the back of my head would get stuck really tight, I think I got some sand in it from a cave, but I brought it into REI, and a woman there put some kind of silicon jelly stuff into it, and it works fine now. After the Myo-3, my favorite light would be my 2.25 mil. CP Husky spotlight. It is fun to light up a drain, and see how far until it curves, or something interesting happens, it makes long exposures much shorter, and is just plain fun for lighting stuff up - up too a mile away. The downside is that it takes about an hour of charging per minute of use, and can get about 20 min. or so out of it.

| | | I'm going to pimp Arc again because I have a soft spot for small operations that actually produce a decent product: http://store.yahoo.com/flashlight/ I have the smaller flashlight they make; single AAA battery with a bluish white LED. Surprisingly bright for its size (brighter and more clean beam than the Inova lights), shockproof, waterproof to 50 ft, and it's adonized so you basically can't scratch it. I haven't tried their larger light (which uses a luxeon star instead of a generic LED) but given the quality of the one I have, I'd think it would be excellent.

| | | Well I've got a couple... First and foremost would be the ever trusty 4D black Maglite that I carry. Great for light, indestructable and great if ever faced with a situation that I had to have a weapon. Then again I would definately be lost without our trusty 2.25 MCP Husky SL. Sure it doesn't have a long life time, but for the situations that require you to illuminate a room so you can see any possible danger or for a photo-op you can't beat it. Not to mention dropping it doesn't seem to phase it's operation. The small utility light is also good a backup incase anything happens.

| | | My petzl zoom zora headlamp is great, I bought it for being bright, tough and that it is. Two good qualities for your light to have if your trying to climb a mountain at midnight. The backup for that is my trusty 2 AA mag, and it's backup is the bright screen of my cell phone. If you ever find yourself draining by the light of a cell phone it would be a good time to start thinking of leaving.

I've got two of that same spotlight, and the utiliy light is handy (lasts for something like 12 hours, not too bright though). I gave two people them to carry as flashlights, becouse we didnt have enough regular flashlights to go around, and then I didnt have to carry one around in my backpack - just had to ask one of them to light something up for me, nice Has anyone used a petzl myo 5 headlamp? The regulated leds look awsome, but I was playing with it in rei, and could not get it too switch between the 5,3,1 led options. [last edit 1/10/2004 7:59 AM by Macsbug - edited 1 times]

It should alternate between the 5,3,1 by twisting the knob back and forth. See diagram:
Personally, I don't think the extra 2 led's are worth the extra money though - but I agree, that regulated thing sounds pretty nice.

$39 from www.rangerjoes.com Its perfect, the LED's are great for pictures and video. Its bright as anything too I havent had to use more then the 5 led's even in the tunnels and buildings at night. It actually took me 20min of walking though the tunnels to realize I only had the 5 on I though it was more I saw a LED light in a catalog the other day. It was self charging, you shook it and it ran for 20min. It had 5 or 10 led’s it’s waterproof and floats. It was only $43. Id be interested to see how that is.

2 of them? You bastard! They are insanely useful for small steam tunnels underneath abandoned hospitals I will say that. The utility light is unfortunately not too bright, but that's ok. It's a good emergency "oh shit" light.

| | | I swear by the old crook-neck military flashlight... I've had mine everywhere and it's going on 10 years now. Good battery life, not the greatest beam out in the open, but in a building it does ok. One thing I keep on me whenever I am out in the great wide open away from my car is lightsticks. Not the cheesy Wal-Mart knock-offs that last 5 minutes, but the actual Mil-Spec lightsticks. These are great, especially when your batteries crap out and you forgot to bring extras. I use mostly the white, green and red sticks. Anyways. Samurai

| | | This is my favorite and I have two of them. Runs about $15 at Wal-mart. I've used the piss out of one of them and after a year of use the batteries still didn't need to be changed. It's not terribly bright, but it's little and fits in my mouth perfect. --WR
