Try to find (if it's available on the camera) the manual focus option on you camera, and instead of just taking a shot of the whole sewing machine, focus on a certain part of the machine (i.e knobs, levers etc). This should add some sort of composition
And try shooting in a better light

Some of my best shot were taken on a point and shoot camera, you just have to work with what you have.

i've used my camera to get out of trouble and to have an excuse to be somewhere, why would you want them thinking it's a phone?

Okay my two cents-- probably not the same Olympus... allows for a lot more manipulation for light etc... Big fan. I threw my Easyshare piece of craptastic nastiness in the chipper when I landed my 30D. They're P.O.S.

Learn what a histogram is and how to use it. I believe most point and shoots should have a histo buried in there somewhere. The posted shot is underexposed and not that evenly lit.

Instead of buying a new camera pick up a cheap tripod for $20-30. I'm not sure how long of an exposure you can take on your point and shoot or if you even have options for that. I'm not too familiar with digital cameras besides my D70. But with the tripod you'll be able to hold it still, get it in better focus and get a better exposure. I think the angle is fine. You have the whole sewing machine in the frame and it's distinct from the background. You have the eye, and your cameras not bad, just keep working on it and you'll be surprised how good you are in a couple months after practicing.

I have a cheapie tripod but I couldnt use it in this shot since the sewing machine was on the ground, i used books that were around to try to get at the right height heh

Thanks, yeah sometimes I come home dissapointed with my shots knowing I can do better but it takes practice, A LOT of practice....
