| | | Im a big fan of pre-scouting and find the scouting or pursuit as much fun as the kill. But I'll readily admit that Ive found a good number of good locations by pure luck and just stumbled across them while scouting for something else or not even actively exploring! Knowing where to focus your scouting efforts improves your odds. Most of the online research I do is after the find just trying to figure out exactly what the places I found were! Its an art or a skill that can be developed no question about it but as noted luck often helps too. So do binoculars. Good pair of 10x50s can make all the difference in scouting a big site or distant target finding out if there is activity or even identify potential access points.
Good tutorial thread, Id enjoy reading more.

| | | I also cannot stress the difference a good pair of binoculars makes in scouting, and countless other situations. I carry a little pair of camouflage Tasco 10x25's I got for like $12 at Sports Authority and they've come in handy so many times I can't even begin to tell you.

| | | Usually I find more stuff trying to find a good place to park than any other time. I once was trying to find suitable parking for some lame warehouse I was going to explore, and wound up finding a well obscured steel plant that was much more interesting. That or I just get flat out lost and find something cool anyways. [last edit 11/9/2007 5:59 AM by Reciprocity Failure - edited 1 times]

| | | For me, the scouting is almost more fun than the actual going in. I was looking at a prospective site the other day and by the time I was done just checking out the perimeter I had a rush. Then again, this place is really big. Scouting is the most James Bond-ish part of UE and it can definitely be a very fulfilling experience as a compartmentalized segment of the total UE package...and it may save your ass in the long run.

| | | I've found all my best sites by simply driving around on my scooter. I was out taking pictures to show my parents the new neighbourhood I'd moved to, and uncovered an entire abandoned university campus. Another time I wanted to do some hiking, so I was riding my scooter to a nearby mountain (probably no higher than 300m peak) and when I passed by an alley entrance I got a view of utter destruction. It turned out to be a condemned neighbourhood undergoing slow demolition. The weirdest fluke was when I was at a wedding, and next to the wedding hall was a small grouping of abandoned three-storey apartment buildings.

I'll have to buy a scooter! Actually, I've learned from this post as well as others that I need to keep my eyes (and mind,... what's left of it) open to UE sites in just everyday events and places. You never know what's lurking around the next corner. It could be a treasure, or a piece of poo. Must keep an open mind.
I'm going hunting for mysteries. Where's my flashlight? Don't Like Clowns who Vandalize, B&E, and Steal from Sites. |
