| | A fond farewell... < on 7/1/2007 11:42 PM >
| | | All these taken on a trip today to Severalls Asylum in the UK. Having been a couple of times before, and now plans are coming to a close on demolishing this huge hospital, I thought it time to revisit with a few other explorers. Pictures taken with Nikon D50 with Sigma 10-20 lense.. These have NO post processing at all, straight from the camera... critique away... 1.

| | | So, the 10-20 has the tendency to distort like crazy if you're not careful, which for the most part, you've used effectively. I like the wonky angles in 4, 6 and 7, but I'm going to disagree on #2 - I think it would be much more effective with parallel vertical lines. I also wish the window wasn't showing in the left side of the frame - some light from it would be nice, but not the actual window itself. However, 4, 6 and 7 are all excellent shots using the distortion to your advantage, particularly #6. The rest, in order: 1 - Very nice, but when I take a closer look, the doorway cut in half at the end of the hall is kind of driving me crazy. Really nice otherwise. 3 - Wish there was a bit more metal panels or whatever that is on the left, and a bit less wall space to the right of the window, but good regardless. 5 - Too much sky. I know the composition is the way it is so you could keep the verticals straight, but this would look really nice as a square, just cropping sky and leaving the overgrown pavement in the foreground. Put more attention on the buildings, and the meandering line of the pavement. Other than my crop preference, this is a great photo. 8 - I see what you were going for, but it's too static with the light switch dead centre. Move the whole frame to the right (aka: move the contents of the photo to the left) and you've got something a bit more interesting. The weakest shot in a very strong set of photos. Keep working that 10-20, not many people bother learning how to use it to their advantage beyond the gimmick factor of having the ultrawide, and you're using it well.

| | | Thanks very much for that mate...the critique was very useful. Ive been using the wide angle now for about 6 months, and Im starting to get the hang of it more and more. I agree with everything you've said to be honest...apart from the outdoor shot, I think the bright blue/white sky makes the shot..but each to thier own.. thanks again turk

| | | 2, 6 and 7 REALLY are awesome shots. the only improvement on 2 that i could offer is retaking without the edge of that window in the background if possible. 6 & 7 could do with a slight crop but nice pics!

| | | My favorites are #2 and #6. I like #2 for the different light sources and the shadows(and silowettes) that it creates. And the shallow depth of field in #6 really adds to the 'vacant' feeling there. #4 is a good pic. I like all the leading lines taking my eye back. Though I kinda wish the contrast was higher in this pic so the leaves stand out more or something. #8 is another good one, however I kinda wish the light switch was a little bit off-center there. Possibly even cropping the 3 out. Overall, good work.
