Life Saving Station, NC

Last summer I went on a trip with my mom down the east coast. While driving down the road by the ocean one evening we spotted this place and went back for a closer look. We only looked for a few minutes since we had to get back on the road but this place was awesome. The barbed-wire topped fence around it had been completely buried by sand, it was obvious people went in there all the time by all the tracks. We actually thought this was a lighthouse at first, but when we asked a guide at Cape Hatteras the next day, he said there were no lighthouses in that area and that it was likely a Life saving station. We picked up a book on life saving stations later in the trip and came to the conclusion that's what it is from the photos of similar places in it.

I didn't take a lot of photos, I just posted this last one because it's the only one that shows the fence that was meant to keep out people, so much for that!

I was only in there a min or two and the shots I have really suck, (it was hard to frame nice shots in the darkness inside) I didn't get any good ones of the inside, we didn't expect to get in as we couldn't see the open door from the road so we didn't bring a flashlight.

I personally would have looked through the whole place, but my mom didn't feel comfortable in this area we knew nothing about. I'd love to get back in this place for a better look, but living in MI, I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.

that place looks like it was gorgeous at one time

The blind lead the blind into bottomless pits,
Still we smile and deny that we're cursed.
But of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst.

Awesome. I'm going right by there in August so I'll have to check it out. So you can get inside of it then? I'd imagine they would board that up..

neat to see some stuff I didn't get a chance to when I was there. I didn't walk around the whole thing, just the front part shown in the photos.

lindsayphoto, when I was there, the front door was wide open, no trouble getting inside. Of coure that was over a year ago so they may have boarded it up by now. If you go be sure to post some good shots of more of the interior. I only saw the main area just inside the door.
