Area of interest around the Tucson area?

Hi,

I just moved to Tucson this summer and have been eager to find some places to explore. I am from Utah and have explored many sweet places there. I haven't had much time to explore Tucson but have been trying. There doesn't seem to be much info on Tucson urban exploration on UER or otherwise. So I'm a little worried there might not be much to see... If anyone has some places they'd recommend checking out please let me know. I'd appreciate any suggestions, tips or recommendations.

Thanks so much,
Jon

Thanks for the links, but the Biosphere isn't abandoned and the map you linked to is mostly unexplored mines and drains. Appreciate the response though.

In downtown Tucson there appears to be a large abandoned hotel. I noticed it last Sunday while wandering around. I think the hotel is slated to be demolished as part of a re-development plan. I think they are planning to build hi-rise condos in its place, but that is only speculation. The hotel is well-fenced in and in walking around the site I noticed a security guard in a white shirt fixing holes in the fence. Does anyone know something about this place?

Hi,

If you have a car, you should drive a little south to the Dragoon area. Go down through Bisbee and Tombstone and make sure you dont neglect the other smaller towns around them. Screw recent abandonments, theres lots of major history in your area.

Use that map, theres nothing wrong with mines. You never know whats to be found in mining areas.

There are also some cool areas on the way up to Casa Grande. If I get time, I will try to add some of those locations to the map.

Around 13 years, when I lived in Sierra Vista, I used to have a topographical map of the Huachucas that displayed several mines in the area. I managed to get to four: Big Dipper, Lutz, Blackbear, and Baumkirchner. Out of those, Lutz and Blackbear you can go into. (or at least you could 13 years ago. You can try the Big Dipper, it is an adit in Miller's Canyon I believe. But it is also a well travelled trail, and I don't know how closed off it is. To give you an idea, I had no problems slipping through the bars.

Now, I have no on whether Ranger Smith went up to Lutz tunnel and closed it off, but if you want something that is a nice hike, it's worth it. There is some old equipment still there, and as you get deeper in to the adits, you can see rafters and rails in place. The Black Bear adit is not far from it, and visible from the Lutz site. If anyone is interested, just PM me, and I'll send you the directions. Though if you do go, please take some pics. It has been 11 years since I set foot in AZ, and I really miss it. Especially seeing as I am stuck out in this hell hole city of Jacksonville.

Other than that, there is another cool mining site near the Charleston Bridge, off Charsleston Rd. (on the Tombstone side of the river) From what I remember, it is a super-small version of the Lavender pit with some old cars and equipment lying about.
