| | | Has anyone found a practical use for LASER pointers in UE? I'd assume they could be useful for signalling, and the very high-power ones could be used to cut tape and other thin materials instead of a knife, or to light flames without a lighter. Not that I'm an arsonist. That would be wierd. And illegal. Just like UE.

| | | Anything that can cut through tape will set you back a few hundy, and it would really suck if you dropped it.

| | | I can understand why we need lasers while doing UE. What if you happen to fall through a floor onto a large web of sticky duct tape or packaging tape! Trapped like a fly in a spiders web! Where is my swiss-army knife - dang It must have dropped off somewhere in the fall! Good thing I have my laser beam here to cut me loose!
Seriously though Most of the laser pens out there are light emitting diode lasers. If you have some time and patience you can use optical lenses to increase thier power (basically put a series of magnifying lenses infront of them) or go with a compact HeNe (helium Neon) laser system with lenses (HeNe's arent known for thier cutting abilities) The best laser system for burning and cutting are C02 laser systems. You'd be looking at a Class IV C02 Burning cutting laser. However before you set phasers on stun Captain Kirk - take a look at the sheer bulk and size of these things. Not exactly Star Trek Proportions. http://www.amazing...burning-lasers.htm [last edit 5/19/2007 2:58 PM by Wolfmaan - edited 1 times]

| | | I've been waiting for this thread forever... I have a 30mw green laser, that pops balloons, and has about a 12 mile range. (It has earned a permanent spot in my pocket.) I buy broken dvd-burners and make like 50mw red lasers. (I'm working on a 200mw red pulsed with said diodes.) Useful, not really. Fun, you bet.

| | | AVE... Can you describe, how are you doing that? I would like to have some high power laser just for experimentation, but prices and shipping costs are far beyond my reach. Lasers in UE could be used to make long exposure photographs. And, with little effort, can be used to prepare 3D digital models of places. But cutting duct tape? That's like using M1A2 Abrams to open rusty manhole cover. Waste of time, energy and ammunition.

| | | You could use them to play with any stray cats you might find while UE'ing. Or blind a scrapper. Or you could look like you're trying to be a hi-tech ninja in a deteriorating playground. I'd leave the laz0rz at home. Not as suspicious as lock picks or- say, tin snips, but a friendly law enforcer might have a few questions as to why you have lasers in your pockets.

| | | Okay the most you are gonna get LEGALLY is an Argon Green Laser, it MIGHT pop a balloon if you are lucky, but you are NOT gonna get a HAND HELD laser that is gonna cut through Duct tape! We had one that was lucky to put a burn mark in paper in college and it was the size of a file cabinet.

| | | I'm working on ones that cut electrical tape. Someone asked for the link. This is the guide that got me started. http://www.felesma.../lasers-howto.html This is a site with lots of good information, their forums however, are sorta slow. http://www.greenlasers.co.uk Pretty much, a laser is 3 parts. Diode. Lenses/mounting. Power supply. 1.Buy a broken dvd burner. (You wont need to pay more than 20.00.) You want about 16x read/write. 2.Buy a crappy red laser from anywhere. 3.Put your RED diode in the laser. (Beware, there are two diodes in a dvd burner. An infrared and a red. The infrared will be invisible, but never EVER EVER EVER look into either of these diodes, 200mw of focused light is more than enough to blind you.) I'll try to get some pictures going of the green I have and the red I made.

| | | We were recently photographing a very large unlit area as a group (to save battery life on the lights) and used a laser pointer to let everyone know what areas we would be hitting with the spotlights. Very very handy, and as glass pointed out, a life saver for autofocus.

| | | i have a 8 LED with a laser pointer built in. it's good for seeing how far a drop drain goes or pointing out something far away to someone your with. as for cutting tape it still seems useless to me, i never came across any tape that i couldn't get through with a house hey. and seriously what kind of places are you exploring that are all locked up with tape?

You might get ambushed at the local semi-active 3M Factory.

Glass and Junkyard; always with the funning. That's quite a statement. It's the only valid one here and at the same time it's incongruent
Red works well, as long as you have some ambient light.
Ummm, James Bondo types, and wannabe pyros, bad news. The only laser you can likely afford that will cut and burn (including your retinas when you fuck up and catch an unseen reflection) anything is a CO2 laser. Only problem being that the moisture in the air readily absorbs this spectrum of light energy . You won't be cutting things from half a block away, or a mile.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |
