Dalhousie University Management Building

This might be a far stretch, and I might be totally off on this, but do any Haligonians know the status of the old building/connected chapel on Coburg Road.

I am almost positive it is the old Dalhousie Management building, you can read where the letters once were, there is also a chapel attached which has had barricades on the steps for some time.

I live literally just down the street from it, so I'll run up tomorrow and take a closer look, as well as some photos.

I only bring this up because in the last two weeks what look to be chain link fence poles have gone up around it.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=44.63891,-63.590627&spn=0.002699,0.005021&t=k&z=18&om=1&msa=0&msid=102732333650298359076.00000112932fb366c3d2 d

The building in the dead center, on the corner.

On Google Maps/Earth, is it the L-shaped building?

Yeah it's a very odd building. I am pretty sure it's a chapel, or church that is attached, much older than the management building.

I was going to run up today and grab some photos, but I'll probably go up tomorrow.

*Sh*t they put the fence up.

I am sure it will be compromised before they have a chance to do anything with the building.

Pics tomorrow.

Next time I'm in Hali, I'll take a look. I'm not sure I've seen this building before (or if I have, I hadn't realized it).

If there's no wire at the top of the fence, all you'll have to do to get in is jump it.

It's a pretty plain building, not right in the downtown core, over here by the universities.

I walked past yesterday, signs were put up warning against trespassing, also that safety gear should be worn inside. There is a padlock on the fence facing Coburg road and one on the door of the chapel.

It's strange how the two buildings are fused together, as promised I'll get pictures.

EDIT.

To hold you over I found a brief history of the building complete with one photo.

Address: 6152 Coburg Rd.
Start Date: Completion Date: pre-1957
Architect: C. A. E. Fowler & Company (addition) Renovation Date(s): 1967
Contractor:
Building History

Dalhousie's original Management Building was acquired by the university in 1977. It originated as a church, and in 1957 was converted to house the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD). NSCAD added a six-storey addition on the west side of the original church in 1967.

You can see what I mean here, the brick Church is attached to the taller building on the right.

Ohh, that building. Yeah, I'm not sure what the attachment is all about, but there are plans to demo the church. Can't remember the reasoning for this, but I do remember hearing it on the news. But chances are, they're leaving the building to be renovated and converted into an office building.

Yeah no doubt they'd leave the old Mgmt. building.

The church would be very neat to get into, churches always are.

On a church related side-note I have a friend who's brother moved into a renovated church somewhere in Halifax (I don't recall where). He had a basement apartment, and I guess some how, I think it was via damaging a wall by accident, they discovered a metal door behind one of the walls.

They tore out the rest of the wall and it was a vault type door, they managed to open it and it had a bunch of bottles of really really old wine, cups and other church-like things.

I agree, there are quite a few older churches in Hali that I'd just love to go explore the basements of!

As promised way too long ago: this is just the front of the building, as seen from Coburg Road.

Sorry for the sideways-ness of them.

Were you ever able to get inside the church?

I haven't even attempted it yet, haven't had time to go around the building or try and get in- I only work nights.

I walked by today and a light on one of the bottom floors of the church was on, I could see it and it almost looked like it was plugged into an extension cord.

I am now wondering if it's just temporary renovations that are going on- though it still doesn't completely explain the fence (for a reno job?)

If it IS a reno job, then the fence is probably because they'll do exterior renovations as well, so you gotta keep the public at bey somehow
