|  | | | Originally opened in 1913, the Winecoff Hotel is mostly remembered for the fire in 1946 that killed 119 people and resulted in the re-working of hotel & building fire codes nationwide.
The former Winecoff building is being remodeled into the boutique "Hotel Ellis". Interior work is mostly done, so there really isn't anything to see on the inside except new drywall and new windows.

Yes, the economic revival of downtown Atlanta is tragic.
No really, the city of Atlanta needs all the help it can get. This building was sitting vacant long enough.

{shrug} I'm happy they aren't just tearing it down and building a new condo/hotel highrise, like they're doing everywhere else in Atlanta.
Too many gorgeous old buildings being razed here.

Yeah, there is a lot of remodeling going on here too, luckily preserving/incorporating the interesting facades and the like. What I meant was too bad the inside was already cleaned up...looks like it could have been a goldmine in it's abandoned state.
