| | | Those and rickshaws. One of the tunnels run straight under the Parade Square. If possible, that'd be the place to try to get in.

Grand parade has been around since the 1700s and was leveled (it's present state) in the 1800s. Perfect timing for these tunnels.

| | | Re: historians thread I found locales to be the most interesting. I've never really bought into the tunnel to George's island thing. It just seems way too ambitious if you consider the lay of that area of Halifax. I imagine one to the waterfront might be possible, but definitely not as big as rumours tell. Also consider: assuming it did exist, think of all the time the water has had to wear on it, the explosion, shipping, chemicals in water, development. Not to mention Halifax of the colonial tunnel-era would have been MUCH different than Halifax of now, who knows. I am sure there are tunnels under the downtown core, with a fort like that there must be- that's what I think we should focus on- finding the main lines of that tunnel, where they were once dug and where they might be now.

Well, I've tried mapping out on Google where the tunnels may have been, and so far, I've come up with this:
Keeping in mind, I was following the descriptions of other threads as well as links found on Google. So it's more than likely that this image is inaccurate. [last edit 11/29/2007 11:23 PM by nootz - edited 1 times]

Yes I know that, but I doubt they installed those metal garage doors in the 1800's. What I meant was that the area immediately under the square was (I suppose a better word than 'carved' would be..) enhanced and a garage door installed relatively recently for either parking, deliveries, storage or more recent work like all of the electrical equipment for the square its self. Regardless, if there's tunnels running immediately under the square, they would be long gone by now. Just like any tunnels which may run under Scotia Square would have been obliterated just to pour the concrete foundation. I think if any tunnels actually are discovered, they'll probably be just short little passages here and there, with much of it caved in or destroyed. Not trying to be negative by the way, I would love to explore under this city. Just call me the voice of reason. [last edit 11/30/2007 12:46 AM by hfx_chris - edited 1 times]

Those stone walls have been there since the 1800s. the garage door was a wooden door before hand. It's been like that for ages. I read somewhere that the grand parade under was used for storage for the military activities on top.

| | | Regardless, the amount of work done underneath within the last 50 years or so would have destroyed any sort of tunnel system which may exist. Again, I'm not being negative, just trying to bring reason into this discussion..

And I am disagreeing with you. I don't think any work has been done under there in ages.

Makes sense that the route to the island would be from the closest known tunnel on the mainland.

| | | Well, I'd found that on a site some time ago, can't remember which, there are so many of them. But yes, it would be the logical assumption. I think I may have found a lot of info on Geocities, I'm gonna have to do a follow-up to see if I missed anything.

| | | Ok, some links don't work anymore, especially this one, which was one of my main sites for the longest time: http://www.geociti...m/naforts/ns2.html Google searches just don't bring up the same results anymore. And it is confirmed that rumours of the Downtown/George's Island tunnel is false. It's been proven that it doesn't exist and that it never did. here's the link: http://www.nrcan.g...bour_myths-eng.php

Which drain is that? I've probably heard of it, but what I want to know is: Is it a rumour or confirmed fact/false?
