BEST locks

Just curious, at my school there are a lot of places I would like to explore that are locked with BEST locks. I have BEST key that fits in all of the locks, but won't open them. Is there any way I could use this as a bump key? Also, are best locks easy to pick? I hear that there are only about 30 different types of BEST keys, so does that mean that I could unlock one out of every 30 doors on campus? Thanks.

Nate, to answer your question regarding BEST keys, no you will not be able to open 1 out of every thirty locks... Locks can be keyed or pinned in any number of different ways--I wont go into how a master key system works, but if you want to learn more about master key systems (and best locks in general) check out the links below:

http://www.crypto.com/photos/misc/sfic/ (info in SFIC locks (best and others)

http://www.lockpic...topic.php?p=232654 (specific to bumping BEST's 6-7 pin locks)
hope that helps!

Thirty different types of BEST keys mean that there are thirty different SHAPES of BEST keys. To my knowledge one type of BEST keyway will not fit in any other type of BEST keyways. (Just like a Schlage will not fit into a Sargent, Yale etc etc.)
There are thousands of combinations of just one BEST keyway.
Picking them is possible but I have found them to be VERY challenging.
As far as being able to bump BEST locks, yes you probably could make a key to do this but I have never been successful at it. Good luck.
Check this thread and pay close attention to what GRIT 1 has to say.

alot of Best locks, need a special tension tool to be bale to pic them, i belive its proper name is an i-core tension wrench. it isnt smooth it has lil teeth on it. yes best locks can be picked but they are for the more advanced. a bump key could work, but i personaly have not had any luck with them. give it a try, worst that can happen is u dont get it to open.

Here's the usual rundown:

1. There are many, many BEST keyways. I'm guessing your school has conventional keyways with single letter designators if their system has been around for a while. If your campus uses keyways A-F you can use an FM keyblank that will fit most all of them, depending on who's FM you use [Ilco, genuine BEST, JMA, Jet etc.] If they are using the so-called "premium" keys, they are still under utility patent from BEST and cannot be produced by aftermarket vendors. If that's the case, you'll have to go to e-bay or talk to a less-than-honest locksmith to obtain blanks.

2. Bumping. BEST cores can be bumped, with only slightly more difficulty than conventional non-interchangeable cylinders. I have not done it myself but the physics of the concept works and I know people who have done it. Beware, however, that BEST keys and similar systems are tip stopped, not shoulder stopped, so in order to manufacture your bump key you will have to file some material from the bottom of the tip of the key. Also be cautious with how hard you hit your bump key and how many times you bump a given lock, as they tend to wear out more quickly than conventional cylinders that are shoulder stopped.

3. Picking. BEST cores are high-moderate to low-difficult to pick by hand. The system utilizes two shear lines, one for control [removal] the other for operating [unlocking the door regularly]. The two shear lines can be a mix of high and low bittings [pin depths] and thus with pin-by-pin manipulation you run a very high risk of getting a combination of pins set at the two shear lines, rendering the plug stationary. You need very tight control over your tension, as you will want to release pins in the binding order to try other pins to finally find the combination that works. The special tension tool mentioned by brandonb5269 can be used to isolate the control shear line by applying tension to the bottom of the control sleeve. I have had mixed success with this tool and have heard similar sentiments from others who have tried it. The only silver bullet for BEST that I've come across so far is a product of the user Raymundo on www.lockpicking101.com, a forum dedicated to lock picking. I have been able to repeatably pick BEST 6 and 7 pin cores using the random-motion raking of a so-called Bogota pick.
