| | Gang Hangout? < on 4/15/2007 9:33 PM >
| | | So me and a few friends were out exploring some two story storage houses we've been eyeing for quite a while. When we got in, the first floor was completely empty and un-touched, but the top level was 100% covered in tags.. all from some group (not gonna say). There were a pile of fresh tags all dated /07, and few were faded or even had dust on them. Did we discover a gand hideout? or just a tagging area? Here's a pic.
Any thoughts?

| | | depends on the location of the warehouse. inner-city? then its likely. ive seen gang members going in and out of abandoned buildings, some with trashbags and duffles in hand. but that was in north trenton. if its in the suburbs, its probably just taggers.

| | | definitely industrial sector. It's a really sketch part of the City.. so yeah, probably a gang area. Good thing we were there at about 10:00pm on a weekday.

| | | nothing i can see in that picture really shows gang related styles. if you have another picture that shows more of the graffiti it might be easier to tell.

| | | It looks a little too clean (not a lot of debris/hobo stuff/other crap) not to be used. Funny how when you try to inconspicuous, you come off as obvious. [last edit 4/15/2007 11:58 PM by yellow_wallpaper - edited 1 times]

Well from that picture I can tell you this much... either the person who did those was a graffiti writer before joining the gang, and just happens to still do pieces instead of throwing his gang signs up all over town, or you just found a graf writer's practice space. Most writers have one, usually something big and easy like that near their house. If they all have the same "signature", it could either be the writer's word or their crew/gang. Some writers write different words and use different styles and can be mistaken for multiple artists. Some will do a large piece of another word that they like, and then work their normal word into it somewhere. Sometimes they don't. Really, at the end of the day it's a big industrial building with nothing left in it but some spray paint on the walls. Personally I think it looks like a young writer practicing, or a crew of young writers practicing their styles. Gang tags are more often simple icons and symbols and words painted with one line in one color, and not the complex filled multicolor "pieces" as those would be considered (though they're hardly worthy of getting a proper nod for being real piece work, again the practice theory...) Anyway, just my two cents...

| | | It could be both. A tagger gang. We have some of those in Hamilton. Yes, their a gang, but they dont do alot of gang activities. They just tag. And they have boring tags, really straight foreward, but they do it in very hard to get places with paint rollers...From what I can make out in your pictures, it just looks like taggers. Some taggers are cool, others you have to watch for..

That would be a 'crew.' Not the same as a gang at all. Incidentally, crews are helpful in pointing out to lazy ue'ers new spots to check out, since, contrary to popular belief, graf artists, bombers and taggers often check out places long before most explorers. Not always, mind you, but often enough.

I did indeed know that some of the taggers and such do help out explorers, but what I did not know was that a graffiti gang was called a crew. Thanks for that, I learned somthing today and now I'm burnt out..

| | | those tags do not resemble "gang graffiti"... gang graffiti is usually one color, a single line in something that resembles old english font, and is often found along side various gang symbols. probably just your friendly, neighborhood graff writer as others have suggested

| | | thanks for the info guys. we kinda wanted to go back there cause there's more to see in some of the similar buildings near it, but we didn't wanna disturb any shit if the place was claimed by some hostile dudes.

| | | Do gangs even have hangouts? I mean, I know they "hang" "out", but unless they're in a motorcycle club, doesn't that usually just involve a street corner or the parking lot of a 7-11 or something?

Sure.. I don't see why they wouldn't have somewhere that they gather at.. could be anywhere depending on what the surroundings provide..
