Makes people uncomfortable? Hmmm.......

OK, from now on, I'm going to explore with a Scottish Basket Hilt sword strapped to my back. Fends off dogs, homeless, crack heads, security guards and more. Opens flimsy doors, clears a path through brush, tests floor strength, plus makes people uncomfortable. Not to mention, I can hack an electrical cable, and do a Tarzan style swing away if I'm trapped on the upper levels of a factory. Damn, its a medieval Leatherman!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

I carry a knife when I explore, since I carry all the time. Around my area everybody does, so it's hardly a big deal. It's not like I'm carrying a frickin' rambo knife; I just carry a medium sized liner-lock folder and a leatherman. They're just useful everyday tools, not weapons. If I need to defend myself I'll just bic-punch 'em.

I carry a knife and multi-tool everywhere I go, exploring or otherwise. I find a legitimate, non-confrontational use for one or the other every single day. I used to carry a Gerber multi-tool, and a Gerber Paraframe folder; but I've switched to a SOG multi-tool and a Smith & Wesson folder. When I'm exploring, though; I leave the S&W at home, and carry either a Gerber or a CRKT folder. They're great knives because they're cheap enough that I don't get too upset if I lose one, but nice enough that I'm not embarrassed to carry them. Also, the S&W is assisted open, and that's illegal in the State Of Washington; as it is most places. I figure I'm gonna get off easier with the Gerber than with the S&W if I get busted. And I really do feel more secure in most circumstances, knowing that I have the ability to defend myself, above and beyond my fists, if need be. The guy I pull on might get my knife away from me, but it'll cost him dearly to do so.

imho the "he'll get the knife away from me" thing is just an excuse anyway. are people really that ineffectual?

ii edc a kershaw leek. decent blade and not too big that it gets in my way, although it's blade design could be a little more robust and general use shaped. also a gerber eod tool.

when you say assisted opening do you mean an auto or the torsion bar like the kershaw? in most states the torsion bar assist is legal.

Yeah, the one time I actually brandished at someone, they backed down real fast. If I pull it, I intend to use it. I suppose if one takes it out in an attempt to be scary, and doesn't really intend to follow through; it makes 'em easier to disarm. Bummer for them. If you don't intend to see the situation through to the end, then you deserve what you get.

My S&W is an auto, illegal as hell. The CRKT I carry in it's stead has the torsion bar, which is why i switch up for it when exploring. There's nothing in Washington law that specifically prohibits it, unlike ye olde Smith & Wesson.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with mine. It's really rugged, in a way I remember the Leatherman being when I was a kid. It doesn't seem to me that the current incarnations of the Leatherman are as durable as they used to be. (Could just be euphoric recall, though. A friend of my dad's used to let me play with his Leatherman when I was seven or eight, and to my memory it was built like a Panzer.) That aside, the only drawback I've found is that if you're not careful, it's easy to unlock the tools when you're using them. However, as long as you're conscious of where your hand is, that can be avoided. The geared jaws on the Powerlock model I have do seem to generate significantly more leverage and force than the Gerber I used to carry; which more than makes up for the accidentally-unlatching-the-tools concern. Also, it's designed to be taken apart easily, so you can mix and match your accessories; which is nice.

The Kershaw assisted open is illegal in Massachusetts. It's okay though, I prefer a knife that's thick enough to pry stuff.

Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people.

Up until I bought my SOG, I swore by Gerber multi-tools. I still really like them; but there's something about a SOG, man...

I always carry one.
Mine is within the legal limit.
If any cop wants to jack me up for carrying it, I'd like to ask them how they feel about rape.
As a young female who wanders alone a lot in the decaying downtown core of a dying city, I have every right to defend myself. After the things I've personally experienced, I don't feel safe without it.
Most of the time you won't have to actually use deadly force. In my opinion, a good, "Get the fuck away from me or I'll spill your blood all over the ground," is good at deterring problem people.

Cops tend to have a different view about girls assuming you keep a typical feminine look. They don't think of them as someone who'd commit an aggravated burglary.

AVE...

I don't carry any knife. In Poland it is pointless since most attackers are equipped with cheap aluminium baseball bats. And they always attack in herds.
I carry cellphone of doom. I use it in my "Cohen the Barbarian" defence scenario. Unexpected kick in the balls is better than fighting with knife against baseball bat. When I disable first attacker, then I can place the antenna of my cellphone of doom in the eyeball of second attacker. The third will probably escape. If not, then I will break his knee or smash his foot. That's why I always Wear heavy, German Army shoes(the other reason is that, the cheap, common shoes can't stand for long my 100kg body mass concentrated on my feet). In Poland is illegal to kill someone, it's almost illegal to do it in self-defence, but leaving the bleeding attacker on the street with permanent injuries is legal and accepted by society, cause the aggressive attackers are plague of our cities.

Once a 11 year old kid assaulted with knife on my older brother. The kid stabbed my brother into his leg. My brother broke his arm with one well-trained(on me) move. Then he grabbed the kid's broken arm and took him to the police station, which was 50m away. He made his statement and left without any problems.

If you plan to use your knife for self-defence, better learn how to use it. And if you must use it, try not to kill the attacker(s) in the process. Cut, don't stab, especially in torso or neck. You can cut the arms or legs, avoid cutting the bigger veins(it's a good idea to study the anatomy), use knife as a filler for your fist. When fists are filled with something heavy and solid, your punches will be stronger. You don't need knuckle-duster, that's asking for troubles.

One more thing, almost anything can be used as a mortal weapon. You can with ease kill someone with your pen.
One more thing, I don't have long practice in using english language, so my posts can be hard to read or understand. Also I've got crappy dictionary.
