|  | | | I will attach some photos of hooks and similar wannabe devices later tonight but here is something I have found to be helpful when going up and in. Say for example you have a choice of going in either the second or third story window of a building and you want to use the second. What will make it much easier for you is throw and secure your hook/device to the THIRD story window. This way when you get to the second level you can continue climbing the rope so you are even with the window it's self and can much more easily climb in. As opposed to getting to the top of the window you threw it to, then have to get over your hook without dislodging it, losing your grip or tiring yourself out. You can (likely) get to the room your hook and rope is sticking out of through the buildings stairways. I do this whenever possible, get your hook on something higher than where you actually want to go (use some foresight about how/if you can retrieve your hook) and from there you can often just "step" in. There ARE some good grapples on the market but like all quality gear it isn't cheap. Personally as far as my safety goes I'll spend $500 on something if it means I can trust it. Now I am fortunate enough that I can make that sort of stuff myself but for those who can't. If you like them/use them there are grapples out there that are well worth the money. What is your life, and the success of your endeavor worth to you?

the specs of it on TRGs site say the pins are stainless steel, much of it is made of aluminum but thats really not too shady since aluminum is 'fairly' strong (much like the GHC which is also mainly made from aluminum) but anyway you look at it it's rated for 1650lbs which means it can likely take upward to 3,000lbs before it actually fails.. Which is complete overkill for any normal person (or small group of people).. But in any case it's /far/ better then the crap "ninja grappling hook" that you can find for $20 all over the net..

I'm surprised that there have been so many replies, pictures, links, suggestions, and input on this subject. ok ... my input and questions for different people.
Cypre - ok dude, metallurgy takes patience and if you're using a propane torch throw it away. get the acetylene torch(its usually a yellow bottle) from the hardware store. if u have access to a cutting torch use that instead. put it in the vice(or whatever u have to secure it but i highly recommend the vice) and heat it until its orange hot(people always say red hot ... but its orange from what i can see). then, take a hammer and beat it to the bend u like. reheat and let cool. DO NOT cool it by putting it in water. heating it and bending it weakens it somewhat but rapidly cooling it is much worse.

A-BOMB - you said that you figured out some way to rig an electric motor to a crank. It would be much appreciated if you could show pics and possibly a video? Also, how in the name of hell did u manage to make a wing nut work with a cotter pin to lock it in place?? did u lock it as tight as it would go and then drill through the the wing nut and bolt?

Its exactly like you though I tightened the nut down till it was solid then used chucked it up in my drill press and drilled a hole for the cotter pin.
As for the person winch I used the motor and batteries from a 500watt electric scooter and rear wheel/chain. I removed the tire from the rim and milled some flats into the inner section of the rim to use it like a capstan, and I added a planetary gear set from burnt out 2000lb ATV winch to the motor to increase the gear ratio to about 576:1 it had wicked torque! I would just load the rope on like a normal capstan winch and attached it to my harness, I only ever tested it on a 50'ish retaining wall.
It could get me to the top in about 40 seconds so about alittle more than one foot per second. Problem was it was bulky and heavy(too heavy and difficult to use on a single line) if I had someone to feed the drum and take the slack I could mount it on a tripod for lowering/accending, but before I can try it again I need to make a better gearbox and housing, and find a replacement for the lead acids.

For the most part we normally find other ways around, but if tied right the highwayman's hitch is an excellent knot to save the rope on questionable surfaces..
