Grappling Hooks!

ok! the reason i found this website is because of a grappling hooks forum. I wanted to get some tips on making a grappling hook and see how my homemade grappling hook stacked up to the rest.

this is my grappling hook

i dont use a ring on the end because i was once a boy scout (poke all the fun u want but A LOT of the skills i learned in boy scouts come in handy while exploring) and i take pride in my knots
now the ONE person on here that i wanted to ask questions was banned. the reason i wanted to ask him a question was because he had the amazing idea of making a grappling hook out of utility hooks but i didnt know what knots he used for it.

i wanna hear your thoughts on the utility hooks idea. tell me wut u think of my grappling hook and if u have any suggestions i will be more than happy to hear them.

oh and one last thing for my grappling hook. what kind of paint should i use?

So how do you attach the rope without a ring? Could you post a pic with the rope attached?

I've never been in a situation where i've NEEDED a grappling hook. If i need to get somewhere high up, i'll tie my rope to a weight and throw it over w/e i'm trying to "hook". That way, i can tie it down and use an ascender which is 100X easier and safer.

Using a grappling hook may make you look cooler or more ninja-ish, but i wouldnt trust one if i was trying to climb more than 10ft. And anytime ive ever needed to scale a wall, it's always been +20ft.

Who was the member you wanted to ask? As for personally we use hooks a bit, and most of the time have one or two on us.. The hooks we have currently are bad cheap hooks until we just make a new one that we can manufacture a launcher for.. as for them being unsafe, Yea they are to an extent but only as unsafe as you make them...

Not to diss you're knotting skillz or anything, but it's probably a good idea to attach a ring to the end. Just to be safe.

Definitely. Friction only goes so far.

I used a grappling hook in New Orleans once. It was great for recovering bodies.

Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people.

I like hooks for open windows on second or third floors, nothing higher. Nothing else works better for anchoring to the window and you can either climb or use ascenders to go up. Here is a tip some of you may not know, for using with windows have the last two to three feet of cordage that is connected to your grapple be chain instead. Get a size that is strong enough to hold you but not big enough to anchor an aircraft carrier. Duck tape the chain so it doesnt rattle around, then connect your rope to the chain by whatever method you prefer be it a quick link, carabiner or whatever. This way the chain is on the window ledge and will take all the abuse from concrete, brick, glass etc. Taping the grapple is also a good idea, it reduces sound and protects it from light damage and normal wear and tear. Don't cover the tip heads but cover all the rest of the hook. I suggest using electrical tape as it is dark, weathers water and grit well and has a natural elasticity. When applied a few layers thick this will remarkably reduce the amount of noise your grapple will make when smacking into things and will go a long way to prevent wear and tear in the first place.

As far as securing the rope/chain to the grapple, you WANT to connect it to the end of the shaft. The physics of climbing will best be applied this way as you want your weight to pull down on the hook and have it's tips bite into whatever is anchoring you. For doing this I recommend you have someone weld a stainless steel ring to the end of the shaft of your grapple. Have the ring at least 1/4" in diameter with an internal diameter no less than 1".

Also, you might wanna put a rope wrap around the top of the rope/chain, to take wear + tear

this is the knot i use for when my friend donny is with us. hes a big guy so he needs a lil extra security and this does the job even though it takes maybe 5 seconds more to tie.

both these ways are pretty secure

ok so i've been thinking on this one for quite some time now and this may look like a big ball of rope but its really a butterfly loop, careful and thought out criss-crossing, reinforcement of the butterfly loop (if the loop is pulled which it is made for it will tighten the knotting further), more criss-crossing, and a square knot to finish it off

Actually, everybody says that, but it must be that picture. The thing is actually only like 8-10 inches across.

But I have used it, and it works pretty damn well.
