HAzardous materials

Alright, Ive got a question. Theres this abandoned building Ive been dying to check out. It's an old military research lab or something and its been abandoned for at least a decade. But its kept in good repair (Some legal thing, the company has to repair it). My concern is this: It was closed down because some of its research poisoned the well waters. As far as I know, the building itself is all right, the basement is probably toxified. I was wondering if its a bad idea to go in or not due to the toxic stuff. Cus I dont want to get cancer and die or meet a genetically altered monster made for the military. That would be a bummer.

I'd say thats not a good sign, but it depends on what it was they were doing and if they actually cleaned up the place before they left..

It can't be anything *too* bad if it's just been sitting there for years. Just remember to get out if you start feeling lightheaded.

a P100 is only effective for particulate--if whatever it was that was going on here poisoned a well, you'll need much more than that to stay safe. a p100 is not a "catch-all" respirator--there seems to be a common thread of mis-information circulating the UE community regarding this--do the research, its a serious health concern.

It helps with most everything... especially if you get the kind with activated charcoal sheets (common in many canister filter half-masks).

Was it sold to a private company? If so, it was cleaned up and should be safe.

Should doesn't mean it is! Remember these guys play with the nastiest things on earth, and people make mistakes....

you might also check the superfund site to see if it was an EPA clean up. you should be able to find out what was leaked etc, and what stage the clean up is at.

Well, if you're really worried, you could always invest in a good SCBA unit, so you wouldn't have to worry about filters. Unfortunately, it would give you a very limited time-frame to spend inside. If you aren't too worried about stealth, you could go with air piped in from outside, but that would limit your range. Both these choices would limit your range of motion, so it may be wise to just take your chances with a filter.

The NFPA 704 (or "diamond digram") is also very important to know and unlike those lists of numbers it can be easily remembered. I advise any explorer to know well.

the above link has the info everyone should know about the NFPA 704
