I don't really think that picture called for HDR.

You wasted your time. A shorter exposure or higher f-stop would likely have gotten a better result than either the original or the HDR.

I thought HDR was about bracketing and combining shots to achieve some sorta even exposure that's not possible, in the circumstances, with a single shot? How come you only posted a single original image?

This has got be the worst example of HDR I've ever seen. It doesn't even look like HDR.

Ugh...that's what makes it good...it doesn't look like shit like those pictures...

In any case....the shot is mediocre and boring, but the HDR is fine. it looks very natural, which is exactly what you want. Find some better subjects and you'll be doing very well!

I think you wasted your time using hdr. There's maybe 5 steps of dynamic range in this scene, there's absolutely no need for high dynamic range when the scene doesn't even use all of what your camera had. Here's less than 10 seconds with curves from the first image you posted:

...and 15 seconds with curves and 5 seconds with shadow/highlight to save the background buildings if they matter to you:

Agree with desmet...

HDR shouldnt be blatant, I think if you get a better composed picture and combine it with a harder to take picture..then yes you are on the right tracks...

If its do'able, do it!

I'm in agreement with both of you, however, it's simply a waste of time and RAM to use hdr on a pic where everything in the scene has a great amount of sunlight streaming onto it. There's just no point, because this scene doesn't have the dynamic range to overwhelm either a digital cam or film.

I think he was just going for the point of trying it out. Not that it necessarily needed it.

Personally I think HDR can be used to either mimic what the human eye can see...ie capture the dynamic range of the human eye OR try and create an artistic representation of a scene thereby creating a surreal image. I guess HDR is what you make it. But this image just does not do it justice. I would not call it good simply because "it doesn't look like shit like those pictures".

By the way I encourage the original poster to go out and try again and again until they are happy with their results.

I don't think anyone's trying to make you cry. At least I'm not. I just think you should learn the basic photoshop tools well before you resort to the latest digital imaging fad. HDR on a sunny, well-lit scene like this is like wearing night vision goggles outside at noon - yeah, it might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's just not necessary, y'know?

Learn how to use curves well, it's the most important tool in photoshop. Maybe start with levels, then work your way up to curves. Then learn how to use bracketed exposures with layer masks to achieve what most people use hdr for (bringing detail out of dark shadow areas and/or taming blown highlights). When you've mastered all that, then learn how to use hdr, and you'll realize that for 99% of the hdr photos out there, it's not really necessary. Dark shadows and pure blacks and whites in images are not always bad things.

It was worth trying the tool out. But I agree alot more can be done using the most basic of photoshop tools. Layer masks will take you almost anywhere and are very simple once you get the hang of them. If you're at all interested a fantastic tomb, and it is pretty damn big, is photoshop cs2 industrial strength production techniques by Bruce Fraser. It focus on techniques for photography mostly.

Keep shooting, the more you do the better you'll get and the less manipulation will be required.

Ok, I'm an idiot...but at least I admit it..

How's HDR done? Is there a tutorial link anywhere that I'm missing. These pictures all look eye-popping and theres a location I would LOVE to try it on here. Does is require any really specific programs or special cameras?

Thanks,

Here is a little info on HDR ( http://en.wikipedi...amic_range_imaging )

Basically it makes it as if your photo is evenly exposed. Try shooting a sunset. If your camera meters on the sky, the ground will be too dark to see. So what you do is take a few photos making sure you get all desired areas exposed between the photos you take. Then you will need a program like Photomatix to combine the best parts of the images into a single one. For some reason the default settings on Photomatix are the worst, you have to play with the settings under tone mapping to make it look more natural.

Here is one I think came out well from a couple days ago. The first one is the camera trying to expose as well as it can given the difference in lighting. The second one is a -2 exposure, the sky looks great. The third one is +2 exposure, pretty much useless I think, it probably took the foreground from the first one. The fourth one in what Photomatix spit out after a little tweeking.

The result is pretty cool looking, but you can see the halo pretty easily.
