| | | Me and my friends are setting out to explore a place and it says we should bring a rope ladder. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could buy one. Thanks

| | | what's the location? You could probably make do with a rope (or less) if you have skills and balls
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

| | | Off the top of my head I can only think of one place in Ontario where a rope ladder would come in handy. You can buy aiders at MEC, they are light-weight, highly portable and useful for short climbs. There are also fire escape ladders that you can likely pick up from Canadian Tire. The thing to keep in mind with rope ladders, though, is how you are going to secure them prior to, or after, their use.

| | | you could do one of two things, the first is tying a loop into the rope about ever foot in which you will eat ALOT of rope.. (it's likely you'll shorten the rope to like half to one third it's original length depending how you make a rope ladder.. Or... http://www.uer.ca/...rrpage=2&pp#post23 Then again you could totally cheat: http://store.everestgear.com/435012.html Also rope ladders only /really/ help you go down, since you really gotta be at the place to attach it....

Actually, around here, you'd have to swim, or shoot a grappling hook hundreds of feet across, and climb across using the attached rope.

| | | Flat strap/rope, stiff rubber tubing makes great rope ladders. Take a long piece of rope and tie loops with the stiff rubber into it. Then quick tie the loops to the rope alternating down each side if possible. Works well is a bit wobbly but once you get use to it your good to hook.

| | | Can never go wrong with a goo piece of rope... I suggest boat line it's tough, floats, usually has a metal eye, cheap and easy to get. No more then 10' needed though, climbing any higher and you might want to consider some ab-sailing equipment.... does this remind any one else of The Boondock Saints as much as I?
CONNOR: Know what we need, man?... some rope. MURPHY: For what? CONNOR: Charlie Bronson's always got rope. MURPHY: What? CONNOR: Yeah, these guys always got a lot of rope strapped around em in the movies and they always end up using it. MURPHY: Oh, you've lost it, haven't ya? CONNOR: I'm serious. MURPHY: Me too. That's stupid. Name one thing we're gonna need it for. CONNOR: I don't know they just always need it. MURPHY:What is all this "they" shit? This ain't a movie. *Connor pulls a large hunting knife from Murphy's bag.* CONNOR: Is that right, Rambo? MURPHY: All right, get the stupid fuckin'rope.

I don't think that I'd trust a "goo" piece of rope. That probably wouldn't be especially sturdy.

We've got one. used it twice. Great to have, but its a bitch to haul. Its also as someone already already mentioned good for decents where you can securely attach it to something else. You can also make one but pleeeeeeeze for the love of god, know your knots. [last edit 2/18/2007 9:11 PM by Air - edited 1 times]

| | | Making a ladder out of tubular webbing works nicely. It is fairly cheap (25 cents a foot as of my last purchase)And is very strong! As someone described somewhere above you can put in a series of knots large enough to cram your foot into spaced a comfortable distance apart and off you go. However, climing a rope ladder is very labor intensive on long drops. One thing that might help is to wrap duct tape around the loops to help keep them open so you can slip your foot inside them. I have used rope ladders of this type on drops of about 18 feet without too much difficulty but wouldn't recommend anything much higher. Another advantage is that it crunches up nicely and fits in a large pocket. Good luck
