Thanks for that link, good stuff. I'm shooting a local band this weekend, so I've been spending a lot of time looking at other promo photos.

The Joelle Andres site is good, too, cute photos.

cheesy emo goth kids crawling over someones grave for the sake of their shitty band is pretty disrespectful.

as for the photos themselves, they are super grainy / blurry / not composed all that well.

for good band press photos look at what david e jackson does...

It wasn't like we were spray painting SORROW OF HER EVIL all over everything. The only picture where the name was left was James W. Sloss, BECAUSE of a thing here in Alabama called SLOSS FURNACE? Incredibly dark and scary history to that place.

I feel the need to defend myself and my band. This is not some HOBBY like taking pictures of abandoned places. THIS IS OUR CAREER. This is what we have chosen and work hard for.

If you don't like it, simply GO ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. It's not for you. It may be someone elses thing.

Opinions are like assholes and everyone has got one, and everyone is entitled. But when the opinions turn towards insults it's best to keep to oneself.

All music is emo (DEF: OVERLY EMOTIONAL) you douche bags. That's what makes it so moving!! However none of us are "emo".

I am PROUD of our music and PROUD of these pictures and PROUD of everything else my band stands for. Everything I write comes from an experience I have had, things I have felt, and they MEAN something to me. So to call them cheesy and emo is the worst of insults to me.

I really liked this site and I thought the people on it were neat...Was going to join for real. But not after this.

Comments on photos {$no=} comment on you or band members.
Rob and other members were mean about the photos, but at the same time they're posted into the forum on this site reserved for FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY CRITIQUES--not a few band photos in a cemetery.

People aren't bashing you, so go ahead and hang out here if you want, but keep in mind if you can't hand a little internet, you're probably not going to be happy anyway.

Well, I'm sure this will go a long way in convincing people. No better way to get people on your side than to belittle what they spend a good chunk of their time doing.

You're going to have a LOT of trouble making a "career" in a creative field if you get this heated over some comments on a forum.

You're in a creative field. Not everyone is going to like what you do. Deal with it.

This would be a lot more convincing of a rant if you didn't start off dissing the photographers here.

When you belittle me and mine what do you expect!?

Belittle the photographers?! You proved my point perfectly! Doesn't feel too great does it? EXACTLY! Jeez...

We as PEOPLE are NOT overly emotional...aka EMO!!

I can handle the critiques if they are constructive, but I FEEL that Irish's pictures AND my band have been basically beaten up. Wrong forum or not this was not handled in a very adult or even friendly way!!

BTW? Rob did in fact call US cheesy emo goth kids. So it wasn't just the pictures under fire here.

As I type this the rest of my crew are out exploring and I have the most respect for that. It's really neat what UE is doing. Preserving the memory of places that have seen much better days.

But I have no respect for people who can be so rude and disrespectful to a dear friend of mine, or to me.

AND another thing:

All pictures of Sorrow of Her Evil must be credited to Irish Mom who has taken ALL of them. Use of these pictures without her permission is called STEALING.

Oh, and thanks Rob. Posting the link to my bands site?

Haven't you people learned? If you hate something--don't talk about it!!!!

Besides, now I see why Rob hates GOTHIC METAL so much. He likes SKA. Pot head. How does being stereotyped feel?

Thank you to the people who actually TRIED/WILL TRY to give some constructive comments. To all the others, may you get caught on every UE mission you attempt, and may your lenses always be busted.

By the way, here's some more pictures taken by Irish Mom of the band:

i don't know, i've heard a lot of people not being that happy with him. he developed a funny reputation in CT because he claimed he came up with the idea of having shows at colleges (wtf)

i was also told that when asked about my photos he said something along the lines of "yeah, i guess they are okay, if you like photos of peeling paint"

Yeah he has created a business out of what he dose. He fucking sells merch. What photographer do you know sells merch. If you check his site their are t-shirts, belts, and stickers. I asked the guy what he shoots with and he made some snood remark. Smart bands know to stay away from him.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

if this is going to be your "career" you have to learn that the internet isn't real life young lady, you gotta roll with the punches. your band happened to be the butt of the joke on a forum where they didn't really belong. i'm sure "gothic metal" is about as well received as the scissor sisters in alabama so good luck breaking out of there!

ps. coming from someone who works in the music industry, your band has no chance of making it whatsoever, your music is totally indistinguishable from the other evanescence cover bands. sorry!

and you're just a jerk...

Let me rephrase in constructive criticism terms then.

The technical quality of the images is horrible. Pixellated, bad light, noisy, not sharp, etc etc etc. You need to work on the basics of photography when it comes to less than ideal lighting conditions. The popup flash will not cut it, you need a flash that's not on the camera. The cheapest solution I can think of that will work with a p&s camera is to go get a Vivitar 283 for $50 (or less), mount it on a tripod on a peanut slave, and use your popup flash to trigger the 283 from the side and slightly above your position. Set your camera to a low iso, and slower shutter speed to allow ambient light into the shot as well, and experiment to make sure the flash on your camera is at a much lower power output than the 283. Beyond the basic technical issues, composition is lacking, expressions on the faces are ambivalent, and you need to learn to make pleasing arrangements of groups of people. Experimentation, again, is the key.

While these may be interesting snapshots for you to show your friends and post on myspace, as someone who has both taken band photos professionally and also had professional band photos taken, these do not cut it, technically or conceptually. The website I posted was for you to take a look at, to see many examples of what not to do, and yes, it's a funny website. Try to avoid taking pictures that will end up there. There was also a link that included some tips on what you should do when taking band photos. Read it, it's helpful.

Toque boy needs more makeup, because he looks like the 'hey guys, wait for me' guy that's not really in the band, but keeps showing up to practices anyways. If the band has an image, they need to make sure everyone in the band dresses the part, at least in the promo photo. That's music biz 101. If he's not willing to paint his nails black and spike his hair with the rest of the band for the photo, find someone else, or lose the whole goth image.

As for Amanda Sorrow's little rants, get over it. It's the interweb. Have you had country fans throw bottles at you because you're in an 'art fag' band yet? Or had drunken bikers try to take a swing at you after the show simply because 'you suck' and you wouldn't play Nickelback? Perhaps if you had you wouldn't be so incredibly upset over someone on the internet pointing out that your band looks like it's made up of emo goth kids. That doesn't mean he said you listen to Dashboard Congressional or whatever the f*ck they're called, it means you look like emo/goth kids. You know what? To anyone over the age of 20, you look like emo/goth kids. Get over it.

yep.

Did you forget that this was a photo critique board? If you can't hack it, don't post here (or don't have your friend post their photos/your band here). Plus this was posted on UER - so it's a free for all.

As for constructive criticism, too grainy, out of focus and poorly composed. Just like everyone else here said. You'd think after ten posts of the same criticism that maybe something's wrong with them?

Your band is not marketable. I've been working in the music business for years now and after having to listen to thousands of shitty bands, I'm pretty sure I know what's marketable and what's not... and so does Rob.

I agree with many about the pics. The 2nd pic would be better if you had the full bodies of the guys in front, less sky in the background, and the gravestone was centered. Just my opinion, I am no expert.

And...... From the Urban Dictionary

Emo

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 the of the face at an angle.

::sniff sniff:: "The Demise of the Siberian Traintracks of Our Rusty Forgotten Unblemished Love" sounds like it would make a great emo band name. ::cry::

Snide and rude comments aside, hate to break it to you kid, but the music business is more about image and less about music. Its a tough truth. If you honestly want a critique on these shots, Mortimer did a great job a few posts up.

You can shoot your friends with mom's p&s to put up on myspace all you want, but if youre going to be doing any serious promo work (which, I dont think you are), youre gonna have to go read up at the library or something about the general principles of photography and composition.

Also, I find it pretty hilarious that you think Rob has no reason to be in the music business. I'd check out his site, you'd probably like some of the bands he has worked for.

I really hope you arent looking into art school. If you are gonna piss and moan when some people absolutely destroy and even make fun of your work, youre really going to hate art school. I speak from experience. Design school sucks.

Anyways, this thread is really silly. If you want to be a better photographer, read some books, or if you cant get to a library, google 'basic photography.' There are tons of sites and pages out there with great tips and suggestions to help you improve.

It feels just fine, I could care less what you think of my hobby, all I'm saying it that I'm not very likely to listen to you after you do so just as YOU SHOULD NOT LISTEN TO US IF IT PISSES YOU OFF TO DO SO. Feel me?

Again, if this is your career you're going to have to learn to learn to accept criticism both positive and pointless.

As far as the photos, they weren't good. If you think they're good and want them to represent your band, then go for it. However, plenty here have given some points or at least information about what was done wrong. This is critique. Deal.

Posted by Amanda Sorrow
But I have no respect for people who can be so rude and disrespectful to a dear friend of mine, or to me.

I think you should relax. It's the internet. Who cares.

This is the UEr photo critique forum and things can get testy here. You post if you want honest feedback. Thats what the original poster got. Don't like it? then don't post asking for feedback, simple as that.

Posted by Amanda Sorrow
By the way, here's some more pictures taken by Irish Mom of the band:

These are also not very good. I'm sorry if you're looking for people to fawn all over these pictures regardless of the technical problems with them and the lack of experience on behalf of the photographer. I'm not an experienced photographer of anything but architecture, so who knows if I could do any better, but I know something about photography, and I know these aren't good.

If you want my opinion I would start listening to the people here. If you really want to make music a career I think you should be presenting a more professional image than these pictures will give you.
