Advice: Take 100,000 more photos and come back.
It's sounds mean because it's so true.

Glass is right. If your using digital take 100's of photos wherever you go and sift through them later on.

You just reminded me how much I missed having you around

As far as the pictures, I would stop using flash, and take more time composing. But you are getting off on the right foot. Just keep at it.

I think he'd be better off slowing down and paying attention to what he's doing. If there's bad photography out there, part of the reason is because people with digital cameras go around firing them willy nilly hoping that maybe they'll get a keeper or two at the end of the day. It rarely works, at least not if you're struggling to begin with. It's true that you can learn a lot by shooting more, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should take more pictures while at one location. It just means getting out there with the camera more often and learning from your mistakes.

I am somewhat inclined to agree. I'm not sure that I agree that blasting away won't yield results, but it also won't make you better. If you take your time and really concentrate on what you are doing you'll find that your composition will get better and better and that you'll be really capturing what about the scene you wanted, rather than just almost what you wanted.

The downside is that you'll come home with aching legs and say "jesus christ, that's all I took today?? FUCK!!!" which I have been saying a lot. However, you'll be that much happier with what you did get.

I agree with that as well, but what I was saying was that by taking many photos he can learn what kind of angles work well and what he personally likes. Im not saying close your eyes and spin in circles while clicking away.

You're shooting with snapshot quality. If you're looking for art, you need to slow down, shoot more, and take time composing your frames.

Today is your way out...

Some tips on how to avoid "snapshot quality"

1. Lose the flash
2. Invest in a tripod
3. Avoid shooting at eye level
4. Learn the rule of thirds

Not what I meant at all! I was referring to years of practice and learning.
How many boxes of cartons of film do you think you have to expose, observe, and correct before you improve as a photographer? Each exposure and situation is a lesson to the artist that is inwardly critical.

Definately learn manual settings.. I've worked on mine and I'm getting better at it.. May take you a little while to learn how to use em, but it's time well spent.

I realized what you were saying shortly after I posted. And I agree. I shoot digital so I tend to shoot more than necessary. I agree with everyone else to turn the camera off auto and start learning your manual settings. It helps an enormous amount. Sorry for any confusion ive caused
