| | | What is the best way to approach a building during the day that is out in the open with no shrubbery to sneak up on it? I came up with an idea of using a cell phone camera to look behind you but I haven't tested this out yet. Share your ideas and experiences.

| | | Pretend to talk to the phone. You can stop and ie. walk a circle for that matter to see around. Better more, get a notebook or the phone out of your backpack. nobody usually pays attention if you behave normally.

| | | Walk through casually, if anyone asks, say you were going to the other side to get somewhere.
I love doing things in which others have no idea even exist, dont you? |

| | | i just go for the non-suspicious look, like i just go up and look as professional as i can photographing, but not dressing or acting like i have anything to hide. it works well if you know your gonna get seen, so you are less likely to get in trouble when you are caught. ive worn an orange parka while exploring before!

Ninja style! If I was in your shoes, I'd simply take my most serious looking camera gear. Having a camera around my neck has saved me at least a couple of times. Nothing beats the "I was just shooting some photos... beautiful building, no?" excuse, mostly because it's true.

| | | In my experience there are many times where if you just act like there is no reason for you not to be there no one will bother you. Perfect example, I was at a recently found abandoned factory just today when some cops rolled up not thirty feet from me. I was at that moment taking pictures of the outside of the place, I glanced over at them when I heard them (never pretend they aren't there if it is obvious you WOULD know they are there, dead give away), looked at them for about a second and went back to taking pictures. They did a loop in the lot and just wandered off again, never even came over to ask what was up. "Sneaking" can be fun even for someone my age but you aren't sneaking if it is the middle of the day and you look suspicious. The object is to be able to do what you came there for without being distracted or hauled off. If it is the middle of the day and you are snapping photos of something and cops roll up don't be a dick, be POLITE, answer any questions they have honestly and more often than not you won't get any crap. On one or two occasions I was very clearly in a place I shouldn't have been and was questioned by the police or someone who worked there but because I didn't act all nervous, was friendly with them and wasn't doing anything obviously illegal they left me alone. I was at the huge Dupont plant near here about a year ago, walking around like I owned the place taking pictures when some important guy (very expensive suit) drives up next to me in a covered electric cart. He asked me what I was doing and I told him, he gave me a ride all around the property pointing out what this was and what that was and let me take all the pictures I wanted. In a nutshell if you act like you belong and are honest and friendly with people regardless who they are be it cops or someone who works at the place you will have a lot less problems and will see the inside of a cruiser less often.

| | | Accidentally throw your frisbee in, and go in after it. JK Just go as quickly as possible without running. Any of the above mentioned props are great. A polo shirt, jeans, a hardhat, and a notebook, may go a long way. A camera is good, if it's a big pro or pro-looking one. Having a cell phone to your ear makes people less likely to approach you, if you look official-like.
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

i had the same experince with a young security guard at Richards-Gebaur AFB in missouri, i was actually standing next to the haz-mat dump taking pictures and he rolls up and he offers me a ride and to let me inside the hangars!

| | | To look like a worker, just wear jeans, a crapy tee, and work boots. No need for a hard hat, because most of the time they don't wear the hard hats on a job that it isn't required. Unless if you go by there and you see guys with the hard hats, get one.

| | | I have to agree, just act like you are doing nothing wrong. Some people I knew at my college took a couch from one of the main buildings and put it in their dorm. They just walked over, picked it up and took it back, acting like they were told to do it. This method really helps in most cases. Heck as a practice to see what it is like, take a dog for a walk...
