It's funny how America preaches democracy when on their very turf it becomes increasingly restrictive, right down to fear of the government. The minute anyone says "Homeland Security" a hush silences the room.

Everything to do with the government's public image is very tightly controlled, from the PM choosing which journalists can ask questions at a press conference to very carefully constructed "photo ops" where media are allowed "over here, at this time, shooting only this. Any other use is prohibited and breaking the rules will result in consequences."

How that is that any better than the regimes we're supposedly "freeing"... ?

What if you get banned from a mall but you actually work in a store in that same mall ?

I guess it depends on where you are. BITD we used to drive to the various malls and shopping centers and act all suspicious at night. Driving slowly with the headlights off, sometimes with spot light. On snowy nights, we would do doughnuts. We would wait for the Security guys to come, and take off only to return a few minutes later. Eventually, we would lead them on a slow speed chase around the mall and finally leave the property lest the real cops show up. You would think they would enjoy the diversion, but they didn't. One time the cops showed up at my house (again, *sigh*) and asked what was going on. I just told them I let friends borrow my car and there wasn't a thing they could do. Another time, the security chased us on public streets for a while till we ended up on a dead end street. He blocked us in, and when the cops showed up, they chewed out the security guy for following us out of the mall property and gave us a stern talking too. It was hilarious to see the mall cop completely stripped of all authority. Can you tell by my last two posts that there wasn't a whole lot to do where I grew up?

That reminds me of some of the stuff we've done.We did something similar to that with mall cops. One time we drove into an active demolition site, the demo manager floored it in his little red sports car and followed us around, then we drove in circles around a dump truck and made a bee-line for the exit.

See that's the kind of UEing that just makes us drool. I can almost imagine what a pic of it would have looked like. Good stuff. Dump truck, wow.

Oops, sorry, the topic was mall cops and what they can/can't do. I thought I was illustrating that they have very little power by way of a story from my youth. Sorry to stray so far off topic. I'm also sorry I was bored and stupid 15 years ago, won't happen again.

Well, harassing people who are complete assholes is pretty fun. It not as if were were going into the gap and unfolding all the shirts or something. It's hard for me to believe that anyone who has had any interaction with mall security (or any kind of security for that matter) would stick up for them.

I just got pulled over by security. It was really weird.

I got pulled over for speeding... he was driving a Jeep liberty with yellow lights on top. I have no idea what to do, just keep going or pull over? Well, I figured I did nothing wrong and did not have anything to hide, so I just pulled over.

The guy came up to the window and asked for my license, registration and insurance. I talked to him first about why I should give that to him, and he said that is authorized by the Auburn police dept. He then pulled out a auburn pd badge and he also had a firearm on his belt...

I did not get a ticket (34 in a 25) but it was quite odd. I think this security guard was actually a police officer that gets extra work on the side? I dunno, it was interesting though.

Hehe, well, about a week later they put up a large 8ft fence around the whole site. But they put it up so that a storm drain started on one side of the fence and came out on the other, inside the site.

I would have told him to wait while I called the police to check his story. You are well within your rights to do so and since you weren't doing anything wrong he couldn't have done a damn thing about it.

I imagine he was and off duty cop. Apparently it's not that uncommon for off duty cops to do private security and still represent themselves as cops. I once had a cop hassle me during a dumpster dive. I didn't give him any shit because I was trespassing and taking stuff from the trash (aka burglary in Utah) but I'm almost certain he was "moonlighting" since he was a cop in a different city.

This one of the few/only pages devoted to photographer's rights, though it only applies to the US. http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm The link is slightly OT since the inside of a mall is private property.

Still worth knowing what your rights are when taking photos.

Thats a good link.I'm thinking it might be a good idea to drop by the management office, ask for permission, and offer a few prints when I'm done. Now I just have to stop being tired all the time.
