|  | | | UE in Regina sucks. The story of the Army and Navy building is no exception. The Army & Navy closed the Regina store in 1999. Although your average ex-retail store is not exactly prime UE target this one was an exception. It was a multi floor building built from timbers and was close to 100 years old. I had an opportunity to see some of the back room areas just prior to it closing, and it left me wondering what other gems this building had to hide.
The really interesting part about the building is the fact that it's original use was a movie theatre. Every time I have looked at since it closed, I couldn't help myself but wonder whether there were any leftovers from the building's original use. Thoughts of long forgotten projection rooms filled my head when I look at the structure. In reality I doubt there is really anything interesting in it at all . . . . . Empty floors and storage areas is most likely all it had to offer, but I really wanted to see it for myself just to satisfy my own curiosity. I was also curious if it held any evidence of the cities former downtown steam tunnel network.
Like most abandonments around here, it was the city itself that took care of the building to save it from turning into a gutted, fire damaged mess. They protected it with routine checks by the city police. When some of the store front windows were smashed out the city had them boarded within an hour. It was announced late last week that it was to be demolished. I grew a little excited thinking I may get a chance to see a little of it. I saw the equipment first start working on it early yesterday morning and by mid day they had taken down 3/4 of the building. Another one bites the dust, but it is sad when you know the no one appears to have had the chance to explore it even though it sat vacant for years. That is also the main reason I find myself driving at least 1hr to find anything interesting in this province.
