My reasons for taking too few pictures:
1) If I'm inebriated or just having too much fun at an exploration, I will probably not take too many pictures. Having fun and experiencing the location is ALWAYS more important than getting pictures. A recent example is of a location I explored a little over a week ago. It was a totally amazing, photogenic location with a lot of great explorers having fun. I carried my tripod and camera with me the whole night, but only took five exposure shots of the same artifact/subject at the beginning of the night. The rest of the time, I was just having fun, which is the whole purpose of this hobby.
2) If other people are taking a lot of pictures, and those images will be available to me, I tend to take fewwer pictures since I know other people will help round out the "documentation part of it."
3) If time is a factor, I probably won't take a lot of pictures.
4) And finally, if I've already been to the location multiple times, I probably won't take many pictures.
On the other hand, some reasons that make me go photo-crazy:
1) I'm the only person exploring, or I'm the only person with a camera. I like to have something to remember a place with.
2) I've already explored and had fun before, and now I want to do a serious photo-documentation.
3) I'm just in a camera-happy mood. Hey, it happens!

I am not in this for the photography so I won't spend 15 minutes setting up a shot. I can come away from a location with anything between 500 and 5 shots.
I have left locations, hardly taken any pictures and regretted not taking more once I get home. Can't anymore as some places are no longer there.

I think that blasting away and hoping to get a good shot in there can be a good thing, and it can teach you something about what makes a good photograph and what doesn't, but digital has taken this a little too far. With film at least you have the pressure to save some shots for those one or two killer photos, but with digital you can just blast away all day and never even think to work harder for the killer shot.
It is nice to be able to take free shots of things when you're not sure whether they will work out or not, but if you're paying attention to your work you'll find that you become more selective as time goes on. As I redevelop my eye after a LONG time without shooting I find myself passing on more and more stuff that I know won't work...most often a cool subject where the lighting just isn't going to work.
I was easily filling a gig card (~120 shots) plus per day at Noho last winter, but now I am finding that I shoot much less. The other weekend I shot 2 36 exposure rolls + maybe 5 digital shots over the course of 3 locations.

| | | | i guess i am a combination of this. i take a ton of pics on digital. most of those are quick compositions and for documenting, and with luck some might end up being winners. then when i see a scene that really calls to me i slow way down and am as careful as i would be if i were shooting film. i take several compositions, i shoot two to be sure i got the focus right, and i also often shoot a few exposures as well.
since i am starting film now as well, there will be slight changes in my procedure. i will carry my nice digi and a nice film camera. i will turbo along with the digi until i see a shot i must capture on film and then i will take one with the digi carefully, and then will take the same shot carefully with film. i may even skip using a handheld meter and just use the info i get from the digi to meter.
i hope this procedure works for me.
but for now, let's see, several hundred shots in a good asylum. 50-100 shots if it is not a medical building or i am only there 2-3 hours. then again, i go on long missions generally. possibly longer than most explorers.
as for levi's comments-
levi-you shoot a decent amount i think. didn't you drop off 20 rolls of film after our first five day mission? remember the ritz camera incident? 20 rolls divided by 5 locations equals 4 rolls per location. i didn't always pay attention to how many rolls you shot, but i seem to remember 20 that trip. and 13 rolls maybe the mass/ct trip...? how many locations was that trip?
i guess this is what i will be facing soon. i bet my reality is going to be more like 200-300 digitals in a good asylum, plus 2-3 rolls of film.

yeah, I used to shoot a lot more - and I used to bracket heavily too, before I got a better feel for intuitively adjusting the exposure readings I get from my meter.
and a lot of those rolls from that first trip were from Redboard State Hospital, which I wanted to make sure I captured since I wasn't sure about going back, under the circumstances.
hah, and on that first trip to Taunton I shot like 11 rolls (about 5 of which ended up in a tunnel next to a tripod the next day) - but on the 6 rolls which survived, there were only about 60 individual shots, meaning I was averaging about 3.5 exposures per shot.
now I'm a lot more selective with my shots, and I do a whole lot less bracketing - that Northwood set I posted recently was only 1.5 rolls, with two or three exposures per shot, depending on how varied the lighting was. I tend to come up with the same number of "decent" shots these days, although I take far fewer photos - mainly because I have gotten better at figuring out what WON'T work before clicking the shutter & wasting some film

To get scans that will give you about 12x18@300DPI out of the box is prohibitively expensive, and even getting ones that are about 6x8 is pretty nuts. I actually just ordered prints and got one of my scanned film images done for the first time, so we'll see how it turns out. That one was actually a 6x8 that I bumped to 8x10....should be OK because the borders that I need to include for window mattes mean that I didn't really bump the size much at all, but 11x17 might be tought without the $30/roll high res scans. The cost of a film scanner suddenly doesn't seem that high.
I thought I was going to be able to shoot both at the same time and use the digital for metering as femaledragonx was talking about, but when there's a roll of film in that camera, that's what I'm shooting. I love my digital but I'll always have a soft spot for film. Once I look through my film body's viewfinder, I can't deal with the 20d's for the rest of the day too.
The ability to do double exposures in the camera doesn't hurt either.

Out of curiosity, you have any online? I'd be interested to see what you were doing with it... I suppose I never really considered doing double exposures in a building...

I do the same, for digital I mostly take a lot. Like 250. Half of them are to remember the place and the other half I try to make some nice shots. But when I get my film out I take it down to 20. Mostly because the cost of it is too much.
I would love to just take 1000's of film shots, but they just cost to much

Oops, shit, I actually probably shouldn't have mentioned that yet. Give me until early January and I'll definitely be putting some stuff up on my site and posting though.
I'm not thrilled with the stuff I have so far, but there are one or two decent ones. I did an independent study in night and surreal photography way back in the day, though, and all I ever shot was architecture...so the concept does work if you practice enough.

The beauty of digital is its cost effective to shoot as much as you desire, and delete the garbage ones. But that said - for people into graphic arts, even garbage ones can serve some sort of purpose at times, though (i.e. texture fills, backgrounds, etc.).
Always remember that most locations can appear quite different on multiple trips simply due to lighting conditions. So although you may think you've shot the hell outta a place on the first trip, the second time 'round the shots might turn out radically different. Try shooting a place at high noon...and then go back around sunset when the light is at a steeper angle and generally more softer.
No easy question with no standard answer. A lot depends on WHY you're taking the photos and what purpose they serve. Of course everyone takes pics for different personal reasons.
With so many places being demolished and disappearing forever, I always think its a shame sometimes when I don't take as many photos as I'd like to of a place. Its a little too late to say, "Shit, should've taken more shots," after the place is turned into a parking lot or 7-Eleven.
You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials. |

Being the lazy bastard I am when I started doing this I was going to Noho in the afternoon because, well, that's when I was able to wake up and drive 2 hours to get out there every weekend. Then when the security got stepped up before demo started I left my house at 3AM to get there at Sunrise....it was like a completely different place! The lighting, the atmosphere, the angles of where the good shots were, etc. Stuff that just blended in before became king shit...

...passed that hallway every time I went and never thought it was anything special until that morning.
By the same token, there was one location I really enjoyed photographing and when I went back the next time at noon (by virtue of me oversleeping) there was nothing to shoot because, of course, the light was no good.
So I totally agree....going at different times of day is critical.

Between bracket and blends and just your average "expose right" shooting you can burn up a lot of exposures just getting good histos.

If I get a dozen keepers per hundred, I'm happy. If I get a couple great shot per outing, it was a good day.
At least with the HDRs if nothing else I'll have at least one RAW that correctly exposed no matter what! With HDRs I start worry so much about trying to keep the camera still, finding the ideal candidate, and all the technical mumbo-jumbo that sometimes I forget why I'm at the site. Those 20 second exposures get to be a drag.
I'm refraining from the HDRs until I get a laptop to come along with me; it may be a while. Will need a different tripod head as well...come summer I will prolly play with them again. HDRs are something of a pain. Ha!
