Ebay seems to be pretty good, but do a bit of research on the various generations, as cheaper ones tend to lack the quality of the more expensive ones.

Its simple, you can get them for free by simply joining the military. Now your ability to use them for your own personal interest may be a little more restrictive than you would prefer, like not at all, but it is the cheapest method.

But there is another kind of evil that we must fear the most,
and that is the indifference of good men.

They're totally on sale at Wal-Mart right now.

i wouldnt be surprised...but a word of advice, get a mono tube style one that just goes over one eye, then you have night vision, but still have natural night vision should you run out of batteries or something

NVG's are awesome and i wish i had/could afford/justify a pair, but honestly, how often are you going to NEED NVGs? I can see they'd be useful in some situations, like where you need to be able to see without a flashlight.

Couldn't a little caution and patience be a viable substitute?

AVE...

You can use video camera with nightvision and IR flashlight. Even cellphone camera can see in infrared. But also every surveillance camera can too...

Good NVG's, which amplify given light, are better and have longer range, but they are too expensive...

I don't see any possible situation, in which simple camera and IR flashlight won't be enough.

Cause usually you want to have your hands free.
I tested a Generation 1+ made in russia for a day and it was okay - depth view was difficult but learnable, the image quality was about what you get from a sony night shot camcorder, but of course no comparison to Generation 3 goggles.

I am definitely getting one of those

You can get cheap (comparatively) NVGs. You can get a pair of 1st Generations from somewhere like Cabela's for $300 easily and I'm sure a good bit cheaper if you look around. Being first generation technology, its not going to be crystal clear or anywhere near as good as 2nd and 3rd generation technology, but it will cost you a good bit less (2nd Gen starts at $1000 / 3rd is in the $3000s) and I imagine it should be good for your purposes.

I would recommend going with a mono tube also. Not only will it preserve your night vision in the other eye, but the combination of both eyes will blend together for a better overall picture. I've used both mono and dual eye NVGs and I'd definitely say the mono is the way to go. The military switched to mono and they probably know what they're doing on this kind of thing. Dual eye NVGs are good for driving with no lights since you get better depth perception (and drive with just NVGs is fun haha).

Something to be aware of... NVGs will screw with your depth perception big-time. Be careful if you're walking around a risky area. Take some time to get used to walking around in them and moving around things before you try it somewhere out UEing.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you'd like to know anything else.

ps. I just checked out www.opticsplanet.net - They have some really good prices on there too. Look for something with a builtin IR flashlight. You might need it inside where there's not much illumination for the sky etc.

This might be a bit over the top, but does anyone know of any, or have any, schematics for night vision goggles?

There in a book called lasers phaseres and ion cannons. Its gen 1 stuff and your better off wasting your time and money in buying one if you really want one.

Walmart carries them for about 9X dollars for a basic one. You can get a waterproof one for just under 300. Id sugest not getting them. Although sometimes useful they arent worth it for anything but very active sites, and thats only for scouting. I think you will get tired of them just being delicate with them.

Get a nvg scope, the are easier to conceal. You also got to think if you get caught, how are you going explain it. I dont think they would believe you if you said you just like wearing em around.

Im not saying they are not cool, just use them when there is a low risk in getting caught.

Build one for yourself indeed. I have about 3 IR tubes lying around that I purchased on ebay, they usually run about $20-$500 depending on size and if they come with an HV transformer. Check this out:

The good ol' fashioned way (IR tubes and HV- Whoo hoo)

I finally ran into a situation where I wish I would have had one. My fiance and myself were in a chemical factory where a cop had just pulled away. Not knowing whether or not there was a cop inside hanging out we went in anyways. It was windy outside so there were all kinds of things banging and moving. And pitch-cant-see-your-hand black inside. VERY creepy. We thought we heard voices so we cut out our lights, and the whole time I kept thinking how nice it would be to have night vision. I thought I saw shapes moving in the dark, but my eyes were playing tricks on me. Then I thought about the end scene in Silence of the Lambs.
Im thinking of getting an inexpensive monocular for that sort of occasion. Plus I would be all James Bond for owning one. Minus the money, good looks, screwing supermodels and being able to legally kill people.

I would just go with a cheap little gen 1 monocular if I were you. They cost around $100 bucks. Would be good for the situation above.

I have a 1gen monocular... it's decent I like... things to remember on property with CCTV only use a passive NV device.... 99% (out of my expierence) outdoor CCTV cameras have IR mode and a non-passive device (IR spotlight ect..) looks like a hand held bonfire on camera.

Ehh, those things get boring after a while. Eventually, just to get off, I had to pay a cop to watch me kill a supermodel that I was screwing. In the dark.

If you just need it for static observation, and mostly for use indoors, then a Gen 1 device with active IR would be perfect for you. If you're walking/driving/or observing outdoors and at more than 25' or so, you'll want Gen 2+ at a minimum.

I have used everything from Russian Gen 1 binos from Walmart, to brand new ANVIS-9's when I was in the Army. I personally have a Mini-14 MNVS which is a Gen 3 monocular device, equivalent to the PVS-14, but lighter, that is currently on "loan" to a deployed friend, a Stano Products Night Explorer pocketscope in Gen 2, and three or four Gen 1 scopes and binoculars. I seldom ever take out the Gen 1's, I just loan them to people when I go out in groups at night.

Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people.
