| | Downtown Tunnel System in Colorado Springs? < on 11/30/2006 12:27 AM >
| | | I have word that there is a system of tunnels that run from the Pikes Peak Reservoir to downtown Colorado Springs. Apparently the tunnel has branches that run under many buildings and sometimes even through the basement level. One such place is a downtown church that used to run their old pipe organ through pressure built up by a waterway that is three levels below the church. I am currently trying to find entrances to this tunnel system that is more accessible as I am very interested in gaining entrance. If someone were to give me information regarding this tunnel system I could exchange information about the downtown Colorado Springs basement network. I am also looking for an entrance into the prohibition tunnels that run under old Wood Ave., the brothel/casino tunnel that runs from the Broadmore Hotel and the tunnels under Lake Avenue.

| | | This sounds very interesting, I havent heard of these tunnels before, nor do I know anything about them. I have also heard many times that Pueblo has some old tunnels downtown, but I have no clue how to get to them. Good luck ;)

| | | I have an research appointment at the Pioneer's museum coming up very soon and also will be going to the Old Colorado City Historical Society. I also am looking into the Penrose tunnels under Lake Ave., the wood avenue prohibition tunnels and the Old Colorado City Red Light tunnels. I will update this thread with the anything I find out.

| | | I've been chasing that for years. At first the water tunnel you describes sounded a lot like the buried section of the El Paso Canel. Unfortunately, that goes around downtown, but not to it. I've been looking for the tunnel entrances as well (and it looks like we've crossed paths quite a bit) - but so far, no luck. There is one entrance that I know of, but the security on it is unexpectedly tight. [last edit 12/1/2006 2:56 AM by autowitch - edited 1 times]

| | | I know enough people in Colorado Springs to figure out where it is at. It is just unexpectedly hard. Probably a good thing since it sounds like it is part of the Colorado Springs water supply. I am glad to see you are interested in the same things. Perhaps eventually we will cross paths.

| | | By any chance have you heard any rumours of a tunnel running under downtown somewhere between Pikes Peak and Colorado? I know where the endpoints *should* be, but no luck getting to them....

There's a drain for Shook's run in that area, in the block SOUTH of the street, and its outfall is at Costilla or there abouts. The street with the rail bridge behind the station. Its a Concrete Arch thats quite sizeable. Go check that out.

| | | There is a pervasive rumor that you can get all the way to NORAD through a forgotten tunnel system starting in the steam tunnels at the AFA. (Ostensibly the federal government owned the entire Rampart Range in the distant past, and thusly had free license to commission all manner of subterranean construction out there). Never in 4 years of poking into every imaginable nook and cranny, nor hours of exhaustive historical research, did I find any evidence that this rumor may hold even a shred of truth. But, it's very, very fun to imagine the possibilities. I'm no longer in Colorado (for the time being) as my work takes me all over the place, but I am very interested in the stories of these downtown tunnels. My brother is still in the COS area and has started some explorations of his own. Someday I'm going to take him to Gilman/Belden (if they don't steamroll it first) and out to the old Titan base. Lucky bastard got a guided tour of NORAD earlier this year, I never got to go in there.

| | | That would be great if it were true but I kind of doubt it. Just watch a documentary about how hard it was to place Norad into the mountain and the one tunnel that leads to it. I kind of doubt the government would place another tunnel into the mountain as that would be very very expensive. As for the Shook's run thing, thanks for the information. I will check it out soon.

| | | I am not sure if the email system is working to well so I will just blurt it out. There is in fact a basement tunnel system in that area. It connects some of the old downtown buildings together. I would be happy to show them to you if you can't find them.

Given what that tunnel would have to do (for one, travel along an active fault line (it doesn't shake often - it did have a "4" in the mid-nineties - and probably a lot of minor shaking since then) and cross under Fountain Creek), I suspect this is only a rumour.

I think I know which one you are talking about. I'll see I can dig up a picture of one of the odder places in it later.
