I'm with you on that. It seems to me as if driving a lookalike unmarked cop car might not be worth a lot. There are plenty of locations where a sedan just looks suspicious, period. It may sort of resemble a police cruiser, but that doesn't stop some joe blow from spotting you at a distance, and, seeing that you're not security guards or the like when you get out of the car, calling the cops. A plain van or pickup truck, on the other hand... I don't even think twice when I see a vehicle like that around a construction site or abandonment or publics works place or whatever. And if you're dressed vaguely like a construction worker and are carrying camera equipment and a tripod, you'll just look like a surveyor or something...

| | | I drive a white Ford Ranger with a white fiberglass tonneau cover. I've been building up somewhat of a disguise over the past few months. A magnetic rotating orange beacon, magnetic "Fire Extinguisher Inside" sticker, numbers, and safety tape that I can just pop on and off. Looks almost identical to the local RG&E trucks. Just pop em on, pop em off. Good times, good times.
<reuben> somebody keeps jiggling the doorknob on my front door, then running away <reuben> i don't know if i should call the police, or hook up some electricity to the doorknob <cristobal> why don't you put ice on the stairs <cristobal> and heat up the door knob <cristobal> and swing paint buckets down from your two story foyer <cristobal> then a few years later, fade from the public eye..... |

Until you park it on campus and the real security drives by and doesn't recognize the vehicle. That's an easy ticket to tow-city.

| | | It depends on the type of location you're exploring. The Vic would be good for somewhere most likely to be seen by cops, the Chevy would be good if you explore locations with just security.

| | | In New York it is illegal to have red/blue or green lights facing the front of the vehicle in any way. These are reserved for emergency personnel and you can get hit with a number of charges both vehicular and criminal. ie impersonating an officer or other personnel. and thats with out even having them on which could lead to reckless driving, endangerment, creating a distraction. and several others. The only color acceptable for regular civilian use is amber. Even amber is not the best thing to use when you think about it. It draws attention to you especially from others who use it legit and police pay attention to them as well. Ambers both as a lightbar and your hazards give you no privledges at all such as parking or otherwise and both will attract the attention of the police.Even using a former police car is not the best idea due to the fact that it is easily recognizable by law enforcement and they may come over to check things out or chat if they think its an actual car. regular cars thay blend in well will be your best bet such as a mini-van or normal car. dont waste your money on something like this.

It might work if your parking spaces are mostly parallel parking. Here, they're mostly stalls. All state owned vehicles, including campus security have a school bus yellow "publicly owned" plate while civilian plates are white with a tree design(oregon), so regardless of the vehicle, it's very clear.

Not necessarily true anymore. There are plenty of P71 Crown Vics that are badged and have trim levels above the black steelies with center caps and blacked out grills.

true, the city of vancouver british columbia, all of their cruisers are Crown Vic's and they all have nice rims on them, however still have the black grill as they are the honey comb style and allow the lights to be placed in the grill my buddy bought one from a dealer near my place, an ex RCMP vehicle (canadian version of FBI however is also contracted to do municipal work for city's who don't have their own force) they painted it black and gave it dark tint in the back before he bought it, tiny hubcaps on black rims, all stock for RCMP cars, he has cops in marked cars slowing down when they see him driving, his particular colour/tint scheme is a supervisors apparently, i have been told this by multiple officers i work with as both him and i liase with the police on a daily basis
