Obviously, it would only work at a distance, but for simple passersby it might keep their suspicions at bay.

This is a good point. I suppose it is a decent idea to go as far as you can legally. I'm not sure about the litigation regarding impersonating an officer anymore; however, I know at one time unless you claimed to be an officer there was no crime. Impersonation, though, is very general. If your vehicle says (your city here) P.D. and has light strip that's enough to get you prosecuted, regardless of what you personally say.

|  | | | I have a white, Ford F-150 that is less than a year old. It has very few options and looks sufficiently bare-bones to pass as a utility/security truck. I thought about getting some door magnets made up with an ambiguous company logo to make the truck look more official, but ultimately concluded that it would be a bad idea. Of course I didn't buy the truck for UE work, but it's a great anonymous vehicle.

That's definitely the way to do it. I've gone UEing a number of times in an old cop Crown Vic. It certainly helps when the car still has the spotlights on it and everything.

Apparently he found one locally (actually there's an assload of them behind a dealership near me) that has the spotlight and whatever else. Don't know if he got it yet or not...

I would double check your facts in regards to that.
In the majority if not all states blue lights are reserved for law enforcement & emergency vehicles only. In fact police were arresting and courts convicting people who had replaced their windshield squirters with blue LEDs.

Yes but they are generally maint. well. I've been driving turn-out cop cars for years. I also have a plain white work van that great for UE too.

But there are plenty of blue light police states: Virginia, for one.
