thermals and other cold weather gear

i am a pitiful weanie when it comes to temperature extremes. so this week began the usual winter exploration dramas. hitting some upstate NY locations with my company from london (cheers to my family in the UK, 28 days later. she is safe and happy, but she refuses to sleep) and i found that i was too cold to truly enjoy my explore missions.

i was wearing two pairs of thermal pants layered, plus a pair of military surplus cargos overtop. upper body was similarly layered. i looked like a little kid whose parent has bundled them up into a puff ball of inflated layers.
...in other words, i looked like an idiot, and wasn't terribly coordinated either.

worse yet, even in this tragic fashion state, i was still too cold to be comfortable.

now my thermals were not made by any special company. they were purchased at target or walmart. but one would think it would be enough!

so now, i open some questions to the community. maybe some of you military buffs or techie people or other enthusiasts can point me in the right direction before i go on ebay buying random items and wasting funds.

i am looking for suggestions of what to look for in thermals, maybe specific brands or details to look for. interested in hearing about thermal socks, jackets, etc. i am also very interested in links to online shops that sell warm gear.

anything that will keep me warm. i don't want to stay in this winter, nor do i want to go out and be miserable.

please help. i hate the cold. wah!

I will put in my two cents for battery operated socks and gloves. I have had mien for years, so I have no idea where to get them anymore, but they rock. If your extremities stay warm, so does the rest of you.

As for thermals, you might try these guys:

This is where I buy most of my outdoor gear, and they have never let me down.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

I'm a fan of merino wool thermals, it's much finer and softer than normal wool so doesn't itch. It comes from sheep that live high in the new zealand mountains. It's very warm for its weight, keeps you warm when wet, has a moisture wicking effect, doesn't retain odour and it maaaad comfy.

Otherwise go for something made from a synthetic material like polartech powerdry. Keeps you warm, dries very quickly, has a wicking effect to move moisture away from your skin and is reasonably cheap. It will retain odours more than wool.

It comes down to personal preference really. The warmth has to come from somewhere so you'll need a lil bit of bulk.

Also check out the softshell jackets, the warmth of a fleece but wind resistance, water resistance, stretchy and usually pretty tuff. That's the black jacket I wore most of the time while I was there.

good point about extremities. i had ear muffs and a hat on, but my feet were cold. i was wearing two pairs of regular socks. maybe i will be looking into those really wooly thermal socks.

thanks for the link as well. cheers!

You can't get much colder then a hunter or a soldier. Those guys will hunt polar bares butt naked in the middle of a hail storm in antatica.

That being said there are a few nifty products on the market, and normal techniques.

I suggest a tight under armor shirt, followed by a long sleeve tshirt, synthetic fleece(so you dont water issues) followed by a good winter jacket. Layer Layer Layer is the key.

Next you need to get wrist warmers. They have electric or fleece ones. The appendages suffer not because the appendage is cold, but warm blood is shut off to the hands. Keeping your wrists warm allow warm blood to flow into your hands more readily.

Go to the bathroom before you leave home(less to heat).

Wear somethign warm on your head. Knitted isn't as good as fleece in this department.

Also neck gators are great! Its like a turtle neck but it can be pulled up to cover your lower facial area and some are long enough to go up the back of your head. Although you will look like a ninja when your done.

I'd also recommend Under Armor, you could get an entire body suit of thier stuff including a balaclava.. that plus your normal winter crap should keep you toasty

Also when you wear your body armor wear it inside out its far more comfortable. Just make sure you get it tight just not to tight.

Although I don't like balaclava's as much any more They work rather nicely to keep your face warm.

Yup, under armor is the way to go. Some people say wetsuits work well to, although i think the under armor would work better in terms of coldness.

I can not deal with the cold one bit. Im from Brooklyn Ny and the thought of even stepping outside to feel any cold is just something i can not deal with. i cant imagine living some where really cold. I was worrying about how to layer myself too. im a pretty "thick" girl but that doesnt do anything for me during the winter time! haha. we're in the same boat : (

I live in ski country.

1. silk johns.
-they're thin, but silk is warm

2. Hi-tech fleece
-like polartech

3. Wind breaker
-if you cut the wind you won't be as cold

4. Bring warm liquids in a thermos (or take sips from some whiskey, don't over do it)

I always double up on socks.
Always have a fleece hat.
I carry those self-warming hand warmers that are like $1 a pack.
And always have a scarf as you can wrap them around anything, mostly for the face and ears.

Under armour is expensive as hell, I suggest you stop being a little pansy. Just kidding.

Any way under armour is retarded it costs so damn much What you might want is to layer up and by a pocket heater its metal ( with a wood outside I think ) anyway you put a pice of charcoal in their throw it in your pocket and your good to go.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

I should have said that most Wal-mart K-mart stores carry a fake underarmor brand. Your looking at 6-8 dollars. You wear this inside out(because only one company has made the seams properly 5.11) and make sure you get a tight one. The principle is much like a wet suit. When you have the tight layer it helps trap a small pocket of heat to your skin.

Also wetsuits are terrible for cold weather(believe me I have explored with them due to some wet locations) due to the inability to move freely. If you do decide to go that direction you can get a 1 millimeter suit, with another torso/shorts combo. The 1mm layer is super flexible and most divers in florida use these in the summer because they are so comfortable and flexible but retain some protection/heat value. Although these run about 80-120 and aren't any better then long johns

i have this sportmansguide magazine i nicked from my dad. inside there are those underarmour thing, but they are "man shaped." do they come in female shapes. otherwise, i will feel a bit odd with the extra room in the crotch, but maybe it will make a nice place to stash my extra flash cards....
i have heard mixed reviews about the underarmours. i ordered some silk thermals and will give them a shot in two weeks.
i doubt i will be getting a wetsuit. but i did see the walmart fake underarmours. they were more like 30-something for a top though....?
