Yeah, I saw that a couple weekends ago, it was getting pretty late when I went up though, so I didn't get a chance to go inside, I'll see if I can get in this weekend

Ya that is the way i have gotten in to the place sence i first started going there. the only problem is getting up on the old guard house. you will need to get something to stand on so you can pull yourself up. when you are looking at the front of the building go to the left of that little building and there is an inlet in the building just work your way up

I know what you're talking about, I just said that it was getting late (meaning getting dark out). And there were some bricks piled up next to the side of the the building forming a set of steps.

If your looking for cool places around Halifax, the only place with the exception of the sites listed on this site would be the abandoned radar station in Beaverbank. It used to be Part of the Pine Tree Line (group of cold war era radar station and monitoring posts) its probably the coolest and creepiest place around, its also very accessable and quite large, so you can explore for a good half hour.

well sorry to post something thats already been posted, but to update the accessability of the site, you can easily get in through the vents on the front of the building, we were there recently and ended up going back 3 days in a row with different people who were curious about the building. Just be careful as the floor is unsafe in many place, i weigh about 230 so i let my 150lb friends walk ahead of me, and its its overcast bring a flashlight because its really dark inside unless its nice and sunny out. As far as getting back there, if you have an old car like i do, you can bypass the gate (with a little offroad finesse) and drive right back to the bunker, saves you a good 15 minute walk, and you car doesn't have to sit at the gate just waiting for the cops to come investigate.

Yeah, I already knew this stuff before I even went up to the Villa for the first time. I'd prefer to know the history of locations before I head up there.

Does anybody know where Fort Sackville and McAlpines Blockhouse are??

I agree, even if people don't know how to get in. PM the people you want to discuss entrances with.

In one of my previous posts, I saw that I asked where Fort Sackville and McAlpines Blockhouse are.

Anybody have any clues?

I just found this decent resource of forts saying that it's on "McAlpines Hill" in the Bedford area.

Anyone know Bedford very well?

That doesn't necessarily mean it's in present day Bedford... they refer to the road as Windsor / Bedford Road. Windsor Street is in Halifax, and once upon a time present day Windsor St. and present day Bedford Highway I believe were one continuous road. McAlpine's Hill could simply be an older name for the present day area near Windsor and Kempt Road.

Or it could be in Bedford.

Fort Sackville only exists in name now, ive search the area around where it was and there is nothing left to indicate that there was ever a fortification there, and the area has become so built up that im sure its been either built over or changed in such a way that its not non-existant. This is what remains on the site now......

The fort was built in 1750 and then transferred to windsor, so its likely that it was dismantled or destroyed when this change ocurred.

The fort wasn't transferred to Windsor, one of the guns were. As for that building, it looks a lot like the fortifications at Fort Anne in Annapolis Royal. So my guess is that's where Fort Sackville once was.

As for McAlpines: I saw a building along the Bedford Highway, just on the other side of the train tracks. It's a round building, is on a cliff-type thing. I'm just curious if this is the blockhouse. Here are the coordinates for Google Earth/Maps:

44°41'26.54"N 63°39'33.67"W

No.. a fort built in 1808 would not still be standing and looking that pretty today. I don't remember the name of that building, but I think most people refer to it as the round house.
Besides, a blockhouse is square.
