Minature Cameras...

Anyone use extremely small or disguised cameras on explorations? I've been looking into getting one for doing live infiltrations as sometimes it's too obvious to be carrying around a full sized digital camera out in the open. I've been looking at two, mainly for their size...

This seems to be the one I'm probably gonna get, as it has nice features. You can get that one here for $100:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/cameras/655e/

There's also this one which has quite a bit more memory and a different form factor:

Also runs about $100 and can be bought at Best Buy and a few other stores. Cnet review here:

Surveilance mode on that is the neatest thing I've ever seen in a digital camera. That could be so very useful. I'm not sure I'd want to leave $100 somewhere for 19 days, though.

Within a year or so someone should come out with the same thing, but with bigger storage and not 007 branded (so cheaper). But I want one now...

Cameras is plural, not posessive. ;)

I dont know about those. I have a I com I something. ITs about 3inches tall by 1 inch by 1inch. Its great outdoors as you can see by some of my pics. THe quality is ok, but you come in a building and the whole place is as dark as pea soup. You really need a flash.

I like the way the first one of those two is disguised as a zippo.

This would be useful for taking quick pics while people are looking.

A friend of an eX of mine had one of those. Was annoyingly employed to snap candid shots of outright private moments.

flashes arent exactly discreet though, but i agree, i wouldn't get a camera without one. If you used a canon digital elph you could hide that pretty well, it's about the size of a pack of smokes and, of course, you can disable the flash when needed.

I could survive without a flash, so the Zippo-cam or that Casio watch camera look good. There's always another way to do lighting, such as a stationary flashlight or even a portable tripod light we had used in HS video productions.
It was easy to move, and had panels beside the reflector to adjust the angle of the light, but it required an ac socket or extension. Hmm... a battery version would be nice.

PS : Sorry for going off topic.

The reason I said something about the flash is most of the mini cams I have dealt with need a LOT of light. Its like old film that had a slow shudder speed. You snap a shot and if you moved everything was blured. Anyways a flashlight wont work that well with most of these. I use mine for outside shots. It takes tons of light to get many to work half well. Im sure the lighter one is probably just as bad if not worse then mine.

I wonder which one would be good for corprate espionage. I just want one that can take pictures of documents, whether it be regular 8 1/2 x 11 or blueprints, and then be able to sync it up to my pda and view them.

I have a Logitech Pocket Digital...it's extremely small and convenient but the lack of flash really messes up the pics.

Indoor pics are nearly impossible to take and even outside the quality isn't that great. A flash is a must if you're using a digital camera. Here is a link to some pics I took with it, then upped the brightness in PS...pretty crappy eh?

What about buying a cell phone with a built-in camera? I'm pretty sure they have a flash on them and because it's a cell phone it won't be perceived as a camera. When I was in Japan in March '03 everyone, and I mean everyone had one. The storage is something like 170 pictures too. I think they're still pretty expensive and i'm not sure if they connect to pc's or pda's, but it's an option you could consider.

I have a camera in my palm pilot. Zire 71 from Palm. Has a built in .... ok camera memory stick and a earpierce for MP3's as well. I dont use the MP3 but the camera comes in handy. Although there pretty low quality.

I use a Casio Exilim EX-Z3 that's just a little bit bigger than a lot of the suggested cameras here and the Exilim EX-S3 is even smaller (much thinner, no optical zoom). It's 3.2 megapixels, flash, 2" LCD, SD/MMC, 3x optical zoom, and so on.

It's a damn fine camera for the size. You can pick one up for about $280-300 these days. Mind you, do not get the Exilim EX-Z4, which is basically the same camera but $70 more for the same model CDD with more pixels squished into it (much higher noise, a friend of mine has one, we've compared) and a lack of movie mode.

I carry mine in my pocket at all times and it has worked well for covert picture taking. The only downside for of the camera for such as use is the time it takes for the zoom lens to extend out of the body.

Can you get miniature video cameras, that come with radio transmitter, and can transmit to small, handheld screens?

Because I would love to get hold of something like that, and attatch it to a remote controlled car. Would be able to check out lots of neat stuff then.

To answer your question, yes.

I would suggest the following sites to start your search:

http://www.polarisusa.com/

http://www.surveillance-equip.com/

These will give you an idea of what is available, and while some of the prices are steep (especially Polaris, which is used heavily by the law enforcement community), you can often build/hack out similar equipment of your own. For example, one of the most widely used consumer products that is converted into a "bug" is a baby monitor - a little bit of repackaging, and maybe an amplifier and you have a cheap, effective listening device. If you are a do-it-yourself type of person, you may also want to look here:

http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/

What you are suggesting is already being done by RC airplane enthusiasts. In fact, I believe that there are kits available for planes, which could be easily converted for use with an RC ground vehicle.

With a little ingenuity, you can make a pretty sweet little rover for not a lot of cash.

As always, check the laws in your state and title 18 of the Federal code for owning this kind of equipment, just to avoid any trouble.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that REALLY helps. Thanks a load angel!

Wow that stuff is so cool. (I have a thing for gadgets) man I want one! Actually the prices aren't as bad as I thought... Mostly around $200 for a decent mini camera, and the receiver equipment and so on is quite reasonable too.

I do actually have an RC helicopter that I could fix this to, but I'm just wondering whether the radio transmissions and the petrol engine would mess up the signal at all...

I'm kinda thinking it would be a bit easier to use something like a small RC car that can be driven into a site, or along a drain. Could add a whole new "genre" to UE.

You're welcome =)

Actually, I got to thinking the same thing. I was watching that show Tactical to Practical on the History channel the other night and part of the segment was a civilian version of the predator drone - just a little RC drone looking craft that came with a camera, carrying case & viewer. It was being put into use by search & rescue teams and law enforcement, but I don't see why it could not also provide a nice overview of your next conquest.

Another thought would be to check out websites of college engineering departments and robot competitions for ideas. While the whole point of exploration is to go and see for yourself, it would be quite handy to send ahead a little scout if it was warranted. Especially if you wanted to explore places that may be slightly hazardous to your health - like caves, industrial complexes, or the spooky corridors of some old mental hospitals where the floor may fall in.

This is getting off the topic of this thread, so I'll start a new thread should I come up with anything else.
