Stubborn door

Why can't I get this open? This looks like it should be very easy to pop open with a knife blade or a coat hanger. I can't get the bolt to move enough to free the door, even if I also mess with the little pin in front of the bolt.

There are two parts to the latch mecanism. One wedge or semicircular part, and the larger bolt that actually holds the door. When the door is open but locked, the smaller part is extended completely, which allows the bolt to move freely. That's so that when the door is swung closed, the bolt can push in when it hits the strike plate and then release into the bolt hole.

However, when the door is closed and locked, the smaller part isn't extended completely. It acts as a secondary locking mechanism, making it impossible to jimmy the bolt like you tried.

If you want to know more, PM me. You can't open that without picking or being destructive, sorry. Don't be destructive.

Where does it go, by the way?

Steam tunnel. I have been behind it, but I have to go way around. If I got this one open then it would be much more convenient because it's in the basement right below my dorm room. There is a door that's always unlocked, but it is far away.

Hmm, I'd advise that you just go the long way round. It's far less convenient but saves breaking anything.

Short of picking it I dunno what else you could do. Other than finding a key, you might be forever forced to go round.

I PMed Scourge the simple solution. Hopefully he'll try it and get back to us.

I'm surprised you didn't know it, Turbo.

Edit: for tact.

I've already blabbed about this ethical topic in a more appropriate thread, so lets not digress.

Just out of interest, is the lock a mortis and lever or standard barrel and tumbler? I can't tell from the picture because I can't see the keyhole.

Now, do you promise that you're asking just out of interest?

It's your common tumbler type lock.
