Why do we explore?

Urban exploration is a pleasant memory. You won't see many adults eating baby food, but you may see one entering a storm drain, or creeping through an abandoned building. We often lose our appetite for many things from our early childhood, but some things, deep dow, will always remain with us. Babies have an insatiable need to explore. Parents put up gates to keep them out of rooms, lock up cabinets, and hide lots of goodies. We walk on both feet now, but not much has changed in essence. When we see a gate or something is hidden or locked up from us we feel the need to explore. This need is with us untill our last dying breath. Some of us embrace it, others see it as childish. What is truly childish is the mundane activities people carry out on a daily basis driven by greed. What we do is natural. We listen to that voice deep inside of us that says "you can go there."

The reality of it is, urban exploration appeals to so many of our basic needs. Exploration gets the blood pumping, and it's a different kind of blood than what courses through your veins from doing anything else. This blood is driven through our veins by the thrill of breaking or bending the rules, by going where we want when we want, by letting our imaginations take over, if just for a bit. Exploration can be a rush, a thrill, a scare, or just a hobby. Everyone takes something different from the experience. Some people like to be scared, others long to make a discovery. Many times they simply scare themselves, and often they discover something about themselves.

Why do I explore? I like to learn, Do something unusual, connect a word with an image, a place, a time period. I do a lot of research on the places I visit. I started out with a curiosity for haunted places with stories that didn't add up. Never did believe in ghosts, but i found the old places interesting, and the true history intriguing. I have spent several hours at a time in local libraries digging for info on different places. To me, manny places are a piece of history, a time capsule.

Why do we explore? Why do YOU explore? well?

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

I explore because it's fun, and it gives me an excuse to get out of the apartment.
I love finding a spot and then going online to find out everything I can about it, and then going and figuring out how I wanna get in. Even when things don't go as planned(like today when I forgot my memory card), I always seem to have a good time. Beats workin'!

I spend a lot of time out climbing and hiking, but I'm beginning to think that most of the places I explore right here in the city are more wild than the backcountry. That's why I explore; It's just a different sort of wilderness, where man is a part of nature rather than an anomaly in it.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

In hopes of finding something totally incredible, that's what drives me. I go pretty much everyday these days. After work I go home chill for a couple of hours and then head out.

About 1 in 20 outings I get that totally amazing surprise that blows me away. Sometimes it is something that I have seen before but didn't look too closely at. Then all of a sudden, bam, upon closer inspection it has been abandoned for 20-30 years. They are hard to find here. N.

Edit/add I should mention not all finds are buildings for me.

Something to do...plus some of the places are interesting; whether it's what's been left behind, or how the architecture is/was/whatever.

I'd say with the utmost confidence that a decrepid building can do more for you than the christian god...

And what if the abandoned building was a church? "A combination of the two, it's just crazy enough to work!" ;)

churches are cool places and I can appreciate them more when people aren't wasting their time in them all the time for their architectural features.
