What's the best way to get around a lock?
< on 10/1/2006 6:12 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I've been doing some UE for about a year now and two of the places I've wanted to try out have had some rather discouraging locks. I managed to find other ways inside some other buildings, and ways to bypass doors inside, but I'm sure some of you have run into a "one way in" type of scenario with that way being locked. I was wondering what the easiest way to get a lock off a door without doing too much damage. I've looked into trying thermite or drilling the lock, but thermite is sort of destructive and I'd rather not spoil the locations for future explorers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

depends on the lock.. padlocks you can use shims on.. normal door locks lockpicks.. other then that crap like removing the pins on the door.. or just looking elsewhere for an entrance..

I carry around 4 orcs and a sturdy tree trunk in my pocket, I have found it useful on many occasions. Best of luck!

If its pad lock cut it off with some bolt cutters and replace it with one that looks similar so they wont notice for a while that its gone and you will have the keys to get in when ever you want. If its a door lock bring either learn to pick it, or find a nother way in.

Better yet, cut the lock off and switch the pins with the new lock. Make yourself a key using a blank and a file.

OMG USE THERMITE!!!!!111

Seriously though, don't cut the lock off, that's flat out B&E...and unethical at that.

If something is locked, there's no way to get in without seriously increasing your own legal risks and almost every way would be unethical. Though, if you're going to do it anyway, learn to pick. If it's a padlock shims would work but picks are so much more versatile and, if you're in the US, it's very likely that it'd be easier to pick the padlock than to shim it. IMO anyway. Although, once you bypass the lock you've committed B&E and could be charged with possession of burglary tools (another felony), so I strongly would advise that you just find another way in.

In case you didnt know, you can be charged with B and E regardless of how you get in a building. If its walking in an open door or climbing in an window or cutting a lock off, if your in there fucking around where your not supposed to its b and e. If your on the PROPERTY surrounding the structure and its posted THATS trespassing. So dont kid yourself your breaking in to a building no matter how you look at it. Lastly there is nothing wrong with cutting off a pad lock if thats the only way you can find in. If you explore by means of "If i cant find a open door or window then I dont go in" then thats you. Not everyone lives by this made up b and e ethics code.

Ps if this sounds jerky I apologize, just saying what I think and sometimes I can come off as a jerk.

I find burning a section of wall usually makes it weak enough to break apart with a small stick. It's a bit slow but very quiet and discrete. Then you can just put up some wallpaper afterwards and conceal the entrance.

I learned to walk through walls.

Haha I wish. more like I walk into walls, fall through some holes, trip on some rocks, then I spot the almost impossible to see way in. The obvious evades me, the subtle stands out to me.
