| | | I thought people might be interested in some photographs I took on an island with a fascinating history. This island is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Between the 1910s and late 1960s, an explosives company owned the island and the employees lived there in a village. These are the only ruins I know of that still exist there, as everything was either shipped off or demolished after the company closed except one building which is used by the residents. Current maps are amateurish and historical ones hard to read, but I believe the first structure is from a series of acid plant buildings. Back in the day, there would have been way more buildings of a greater size and in more prominent locations than this, which is stuck in the middle of nowhere in the woods. The shack thing might be a train operator place, as the different parts of the explosives were made in different locations, moved on a (I think) electric train and put together, stored and shipped off island. Actually, they are currently finding nitro that was buried there and they have to explode it!

| | | Fantastic unique location and photos Mabel. I especially like the 3rd one. Welcome aboard, nothing like hitting the ground running... And maybe that exploding nitro helped! I bet you didn't even need a boat to get back to Victoria, Wheeee! 1st Airborne UE Squadron.

| | | Regarding the train, there is at least one surviving boxcar from the plant. The plant was owned by CIL, and I was around the outside of it recently (the island, not the plant...) Peach

| | | yes, CIL is correct. i was trying not to be too specific! regarding the boxcar, i have not run across it, and as far as i know no one there knows of it. i have seen some derelict automobiles perched on the edge of a cliff which is where people used to dispose of them in the village. everyone's vehicles then were always out of date! the boxcar would be very cool, but i haven't heard of it. would love to find it!

| | | I recall hearing about this island. I heard it's been for sale for some time, but zoning and the potential for chemical contamination. They want to make it a super exclusive island for the rich, with a gold course and all. Don't know if the sale went through though. ::

| | | actually, the current owners have had it for several years, and the golf course has been there since the early 90s i think. it is private. however, the current owners are preserving rare wetlands ecosystems (as opposed to building a marina)and restricting development. there will be a interpretive marine centre in sydney which will allow naturalist tours on the island. at least that is the plan. decontamination is ongoing, both from factory waste and domestic waste.
