| | | Posted by Servo Oh man... don't anyone read this thread and think that laser pointers or radio transmitters are going to have any effect on cameras. What a steaming pile. The only thing I see that might work is setting up a laser on a tripod, but unless the laser shines directly into the camera, it's not going to blind it. Nor will it have any effect on permanently or even temporarily blinding/damaging the camera even if it's shone directly in. CCD bakeout would take a much stronger laser than any of you will be able to get your hands on. As for the radio transmitter... you wouldn't be able to haul around one big enough to cause any kind of major interference.
|
Yeah that's pretty much what I was saying. The cameras themselves are encased in weatherproof, impact proof, radio proof cases, that have a small plastic window in front of the actual lens. I've often wondered if firing a paintball at this little window would blank it out. But I guess it would make too much noise and generally be too destructive (although these lenses are actually replaceable).

| | | I have security camera's placed at 3 entrances to my house. A simple laser pen Will NOT Interfere with them. Neither will a FRS radio. on the moniter when someone is pointing a laser at the camera all you see is a white dot, to better explain this.... shine your laser in your eye, all that you see that is Red, the camera sees as white... thats what i see on my system at my house... I've tried various times to try to block out the signal...

That's a great idea! everyone should rush out and shine lasers in their eyes immediately. Ignore that little warning label that says it causes retina damage and blindness, Mole knows better. You know, you guys COULD use google, but maybe that would be too much of a strain on your poor fingers http://www.naimark.net/projects/zap/howto.html Sorry if I've offended anyone, but I'm sick of reading 50 posts of blatant speculation and nitpicky argument with absolutely jack shit backing them up. In my experience (I work at a TV station and have plenty of time to dick around with old and new equipment), the effects of a laser on a camera depends on the type and strength of the laser (some of those pointers and pens are more or less powerful), and on the age and technology of the camera, as mentioned before. If someone's going to do this you'll need to consider the cameras being used, the monitoring setup, and the attentiveness/laziness of staff (lago1's target sounds like a good place to do it).

The sad part is, that when Warner was doing Good Idea Bad Idea, I wasn't a kid, I was in university. Anyone who shines a laser in their eye to see what happens deserves to be permanently blinded. Maybe even killed, because we don't want their genes mucking up the pool later on. Geez, guys, all you have to do is hook up your laptop in the back of a non-descript van outside the building with a sattelite connection to the internet. Hack into the building's security system and shut down the cameras! I learned how to do this by watching very closely while I was playing "Uplink". C.

;) Nice.... good link that you posted. From the Link Freak posted......
All off-the-shelf laser pointers are Class IIIa lasers, emitting light from 1 - 5 milliwatts. The official view is that they cannot burn or damage skin, but can produce "spot blindness" under the right conditions and should have a "danger" label attached. Spot, or temporary, blindness can indeed be hazardous, for example, while driving a vehicle. But, contrary to the popular belief, not a single instance of permanent eye damage from laser pointers has been recorded anywhere, according to a report published in the Industrial Safety and Hygiene News in May 2000.

| | | Like Ninj said, the best way past a camera is to calmly walk past the camera. And as much as I adore active sites, if you have to be taking down security cameras, you might want to consider if your site of choice isn't just a smidge too active. If it's a factory or something you'd be better off going in during the day and pretending to work there.

| | | That's probably right. The place I have in mind actually doesn't need any security camera intervention, it's just that one can see the camera banks from outside so if need be, we could probably take the cameras down and have one person on a cell phone watching to see if/when the laser/ion gun/magic robot pistol on a tripod disabled the camera. However, we've found another way in, and besides, have determined that nobody watches the cameras anyway.

| | | I've been round a whole site in a bright orange boiler suit, red golves and pen + clipboard. I even found the nerve to sit in the lunch room and have coffee and biscuits with everyone. I had to bite my tongue VERY hard sometimes to avoid laughing. And me and a friend have managed to evade getting possibly beat up and turned in to the police because he was dressed up as a security guard. Just a word of advice though, print out a checklist to fill out on your clipboard before you go, otherwise people are going to look at it, see a blank piece of paper and start to sus you out.

| | | Well, first off... if the camera is well shielded, as most good security cameras should be, shooting it with RF will not disable it or cause significant picture disruption. If it did, you would probably be looking at something like this: http://sffma.net/147_1998.htm - Color distortion in some images from a nearby FM broadcast transmitter http://sffma.net/images/Mvc-748f.jpg - nifty herringbone garbage I tested using a laser pointer on a couple of different cameras, and here's what I found... the laser pointer does nothing. Nada. All it does is create a white dot, and, on my Concord 3103 digital camera, some neat newton rings. View the results here. I REALLY had to play with it to get this, and not just a white dot with the normal surroundings visible. My Panasonic camcorder just shows the white dot, no matter what I do. I can't blind it at all. My best suggestion, should you want to mess with a security camera, would be to quickly cool the lens or glass cover over the lens with a freeze spray (if it's within reach). If you've got South Florida-style humidity going on, the lens will immediately fog up once it's about 10 degrees below ambient. Edit: More experimentation here. Some of the resulting images would make awesome wallpaper. [last edit 11/28/2003 9:15 AM by EvilSpork - edited 1 times]

what kind of building are you hacking into that has a security system that interfaces with the internet? I don't know why anybody would pose such a potential security risk just to be able to control security systems remotely by hooking it up to the internet. What purpose is their for having internet access to your security, other than being able to see the camera output or get a status check, which I'm sure most security systems that interface with the internet (if they do widely exist) give you this at the absolute most and give no access to the actual controls to elecronics in the building... In other words I think you were playing uplink and you got some good ideas and went with the "lets not and say we did" approach, especially because you said a non-descript van, which sounds like a movie or a tv show instead of a practical idea like "your car". ...not that its not possible that dumb people hook their security systems into their networks on a public (on the internet) network [last edit 11/29/2003 9:24 PM by mike-o - edited 2 times]
