Product adivisory; do not buy

Nite Eyez LED conversion for D cell maglites.

Absolute garbage.

I broke both my current xenon and the backup Krypton standard bulb for my 2d.

Having loved the Nite Eyez products in the past I figured their 8 bucks vs 18 bucks for the 3 watt mag factory upgrade should be a no brainer.

Wrong.

This weak ass led puts out so little light it is pathetic.
While well constructed the light output from a heavy light like this is ENTIRELY unacceptable.

I have not yet tested the factory MAG Led's, but they better be a hell of a lot better than this bullshit.
Or maybe I'm so used to the "day" light of incandescent, that I don't get it, but to me it sucks, no worth the 8 bucks. Especially for some shit made in China.
The grip and clip rocks, the "anti roller " is great, The AA tail cap converter is great, but this thing, save your money.

And for the record, I even tried installing two brand new batteries.Christ my AA mag puts out more light, and I've seen the Nite Eyez AA conversion, and it is pretty blinding, although not like the small tac lights powered by CR123's.

Take it as you will.
Don't say I never did nothing for ya!

Yeah, I took a look at the night eyez one and the mag one. The night eyez one looks like a complete hack compaired to the mag one. The mag one looks like its pretty good quality.

I bought it....
Hey at least the girlfriend likes it.... in the meantime I'll continue to use anything producing better light.
I think the selling point HAS to be the longevity and NOT the brightness!

I'd agree. I "upgraded" my bulb a little while ago but was disappointed to find that the Nite Ize bulb is substantially dimmer than the original Mag bulb.

Thanks for the confirmation; I bought it cheap, and was hopeful for the durability after breaking several bulbs after drops onto concrete (once while using it as a light for mechanical /garage purposes.

I thought LED's would blow away the old Xenon, after all the Mag Upgrade is advertised 3 watt, and it seemed suspect that the Nite version advertised no output.

The AA Upgrade is pretty bright, god knows skelly about put my eye out with that fucking thing on his 15 year old 2 aa mag.

The Nite-Ize for D sized Mag isn't meant to be very bright. Did you ever read the directions on the back? It says to put them in once the regular bulb starts dimming, and you will get more use out of batteries, or you'll get triple digit hours with new batteries.

The 3AA Minimag is incredibly bright compared to a regular Minimag even though its about 1.5 times longer. The battery life isn't that great, but you don't need more than 3 hours per set of batteries in the light.

I don't recall reading that, and I spent some time in the store looking for specifics. If this is the case I think I would rather put in fresh batteries rather than suffer dim light of any kind. At least I now have an unbreakable backup bulb (almost).

Read http://www.flashlightreviews.com before buying any flashlight or LED upgrade. You'll save a lot of time and money reading reviews as opposed to using trial and error to find lights suitable for your needs.

Never trust flashlight packaging or advertising for anything beyond the size of batteries required. 99.9% of vendor-provided flashlight specs are complete unadulterated bullshit.

Nite Ize C/D cell conversion LEDs are intended for very long runtime--measured literally in days. As a consequence of this, their overall output is very low. Long duration, low output, emitters have their uses for some roles, such as emergency and survival lighting. Nite Ize LEDs aren't junk, they're just niche products stupidly marketed to the general public.

There are high-powered Maglite LED conversion kits available. Take a look at:

http://www.flashli.../lunaled_2cell.htm
http://www.flashli...aglite_mag-led.htm

He's since bought an identical replacement and I've seen it. It's not that bright. The 3AA Minimag LED is incredibly bright compared to that thing. The Mag LED upgrades uses a Luxeon LED and it's an entirely different thing from a regular LED.

Thanks for the info: I just wish the manufacturer would have put SOME sort of specs/intended usage info on the package.

And yes, the one bit of info that was on the packaging was a runtime measure in LOTS of hours.

Great responses, thanks people.

But if they had done that, you wouldn't have had to give them money in order to figure out that their product didn't suit your needs. This would have been bad for their profits.

If you're paying less than 20 bucks for a flashlight, it's going to be a piece of shit. There are exceptions, but unless it's from a reputable name like Mag or Sure Fire, stay away!

SureFire would like you to believe that so they can sell their overpriced flashlights.

What do you have?

Many manufacture seem to not like to publish the light output of their units, and/or rate them in watts, which is totally useless. I rather have two cheap lights in a dark place, than one broken expensive flashlight. I will carry three if my ass depends on having light.

Many of the problem lights are rated in watts. Golston 7W for example, garbage

Watts is used because it measures the true optical power. What you seem to want to know what is the lumens rating, which is a whole another science.

Actually in lighting devices, watts has nothing to do with optical power. It's used to measure the electrical power going in, like "40W lightbulb" means it uses 40W of electricity.

Get a good regulated LED light. Regulated LED lights are almost always superior to regular light bulbs, because the electronics regulates the output for constant light output regardless of battery depletion until they get low enough it can't maintain the same output anymore and it starts to dim. Regular Maglite is quite bright with new batteries, but loses output very quickly
