Freshly aquired GPS units

Howdy folks, I have just come in to the possession of a couple of GPS units. They are both a Garmin product, one being a GPS V, and one being a Etrex legend C.

I have downloaded manuals for both and that's all fine, but I have never used one and don't know if the technology is too old, or if they would be of use to me relative to todays standards of GPS units.

Input would be appreciated. N.

N,

That ETrex is a handy little unit. I had a Magellan, which was a good unit, but my ETrex is a lot easier on the batteries, and it has been 100% reliable. It doesnt' have some of the hot-shot features, like navigational buoys, but since you aren't a sailor, I don't see where its a problem. It has a fine little tracking program, plenty of programmable waypoints, and the main fields can be reset to almost anything you need. For your use, these should work just fine. I have no experience with the GPS V

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

IS the Etrex the YELLOW model? I remember those, they are actually VERY handy, because they are super small, I would carry that one as a backup honestly... but very accurate, I took a piss in the middle of a field one night, and thought I had lost my smokes (with 4 joints in) It was the middle of the night!, but I didn't find them where I took a leak, I found them on another walking route we took, I mean, it's only a bit of grass, but hell. If I didn't have the GPS, I never wouldhave enjoyed that extra large Pizza that much!!

The Legend C is a very nice GPS. It can handle 24MB of uploaded maps and will do auto-routing. I think they sell for around $200 Canadian.

we still use my buddies EMap (the Emap line was shitcanned and turned into the Etrex Series later on I think) it's old and B&W, I don't even think it's grey scale.. But bottom line if it syncs up to satellites then who cares how 'outdated' it is.. Basicly the major advancements (that I can see) are higher rez screens and more color, these don't make it any more functional, just more 'pretty'.. there are however things like WAAS which can be pretty useful from what I hear.. My buddies EMap sometimes has problems getting a link in downtown Chicago, but my buddies newer magellan almost always can.. either way though if it syncs up and shows where you are it's all good.. Unless yer the type that needs not only functional but 'pretty' in which case prepare to drop a few hundred so yer GPS smells of roses.....
So basically we use a step (or two) down from that most of the time and it works just fine..

It's not all just about being pretty.

The newer units have more memory, making frequent map uploads during a road trip unnecessary. The new Cx series uses memory cards, which I find quite handy.

The colour screen allows you to zoom out a little and still tell the difference between a trail, a creek, and a topo line

As you mentioned, WAAS, as well as some of the newer antenna systems, make it easier to keep a signal in built up and heavily forested areas.

Your Emap doesn't compare to the newer Etrex series, and I'm not talking about the old yellow Etrex, I'm talking about the C and Cx series. It still works, but dropping a few hundred gets you more than a GPS that "smells of roses"

so yer GPS smells of roses.....

That's what I'm thinkin, It definately has value. I saw a Magellan at Canadian tire for 139. ca. so this thing is worth a few bucks anyhow. I'm starting to slowly learn what I can do with it. N.

I also have the Garmin e-trek legend, it's a great little unit works excellent the only thing I recommend is the Metro guide Canada software it really helps, we made a trip up to Camp Bison last weekend and I don't think we would have found it if I hadn't had my GPS due to how remote it is, it even showed the military road. The software is almost as expensive as the unit but you can pick up a used copy on ebay, the pirated copies of the software I've found don't work it won't let you upload maps to your GPS.

Okay I see that some of that has to do with the declutter function, and I think there is a CD Rom for a more detailed map of my area. N.

N. thats the way mine works. You load the map for thea area you will be in, and thats where you get the detail. Take a pretty big system to hold all the data for the whole world!

I wasn't saying that the newer ones don't have cool functions, and I wouldn't recommend getting an old ass EMap, but no reason to get the fully top of the line $800 GPS when a $180 one will do the job just fine.. *shug*
Also I'd recommend if you buy a map pack try to find one that both companies can use.. that way you won't have to buy two sets of it or if you switch later on you can use it on either.. at least I think they can share maps.. I know they both can use the same ones I just dunno if they are the same format, anyone know about that?

I know a company sells preset cards for clusters of states for the US maps.. thats kinda cool to me.. I would say if you buy a GPS I would at LEAST get one with expandable memory as an option..

And a note on WAAS, Last I read it only works in north america, I dunno of they started to implement that anywhere else yet as I read that a while back.. If anyone knows about that as well that would more then likely be interesting to the people that don't live in NA

Normally the only problem we run into it that the EMap takes a bit of finding a sweet spot on bridges and the such in downtown chicago.. other then that hardly ever more then 5 min if we are in a fairly open area..
