First time...please be gentle

Hi everybody.

I am pretty much a newbie to both the exploring and photography, but i must say I am now hooked on both. (I used to be hooked on phonics, but I got that monkey off my back.)

Here are a few of my favourites so far. -sigh- cliche chair pics included.

Please feel free to comment and critique, as I am still learning my technique and developing my eye.

Comments from one n00b to another...

1. I think it would have been better if the entire thing were in focus... the narrow depth of field is just distracting here because of the way you've composed it - my eye is drawn across the whole bumper, not just the part in focus.

2. Actually a pretty good chair shot! (as tired as I am of them). Like the colour.

3. A not very good chair shot. Not feeling this one at all... not very exciting to look at, pale colours, etc.

4. Makes me afraid of falling down those stairs! Love the composition. Here is a great example of a close-up shot that can focus on small details while giving it some context at the same time... "gives me a feel for the place" as I say too often.

5. Quite nice.

6. The blown out window is distracting. I'm probably the worst offender for doing this myself, and have been critiqued on it several times, and now I notice it all the time. Other than that there seems to be a lot of wasted space on the right-hand side and bottom of the scene though.

7. Oh my god another ghost!

8. Needs to be sharper, but well composed.

Looking forward to more of your work!

Hee hee, well don't listen to them and don't let them get into your head like that!

I think blowing out the highlights, or leaving windows over exposed is an artistic choice. Especially if you are shooting on film, it can have some nice random effects. It can never really be replicated in digital, and I think that's what people are griping about. This was digital, but I think I got very lucky that I could purposely over expose the window and get a bit of flare.

Thank you so much for the constructive criticism. It is always appreciated.

5 is brilliant. Just a little bright.

8 has great composition. Just could use a little more contrast and density.

Yeah I'm still a fan of overexposed windows here and there...

Never apologize for your lonely chair shots. Ever.

Overall, for being a beginner, these are really nice. Number five pops right out as one of those "holy hell, that's amazing" shots, and while the others don't scream 'amazing' to me, they certainly don't scream 'n00b' or even average. You have a good eye, try to train yourself to find compositions in your view finder before you snap the photo. That's the one major thing I'd recommend you work on. Some of these (5 included) are very successful in this regard, while others could be a little more intentional in their design.

Beautiful work, keep us informed of future progress and shots, and by all means, welcome to UER.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.

Number 5 is the only one that really draws my attention. Interesting ideas for the others, but your composition isn't the best. It's something that is easily improved though. But, 5 kicks ass. Great job, there is so much depth in that shot, and I agree with your choice of black and white.

I like 5 the best, but they're all really good.

Shai, what is wrong with his composition? You say "not the best" but give no reason. Well, what does mr. expert photographer have to say on he subject? You can't just vaguely describe his composition as mediocre without giving suggestions on improvement or at the very least a reason why the composition of the others isn't good.
