Closed Woodfibre Mill

I'm wondering if anyone has made it over to the Woodfibre mill down Howe Sound since it closed down.

I'm hoping to round up a boat in the coming weeks to get there and back so if anyone is interested your welcome to join in. Any advice on the site if you've seen it would be appreciated.

I want to go..... =(

I dont know if this is what you are talking about.

But you might be able to move along the coast from Squamish.
Looks like about 5 miles and a river crossing. Not beyond reason.

I bet TL wants to go.

Yeah thats the mill, the Squamish river unfortunately doesn't have any bridges until you get upstream past Squamish near the airport there. The river is pretty low right now and should even be only slightly numbing to cross. Currently I only have a canoe that can hold 3/4 people, could cross the harbour and hike/paddle down the shore or go from the other side of the sound near the ferry terminal that used to link the mill with the mainland. Trying to arrange an actual boat still though.

It's called the Port Mellon mill. I found a few weak sauce pictures online and here's one of them:

"Between Gambier Island and the Port Mellon mill lies Woolridge Island, privately owned with a single residence ashore."

The mill has been a topic of environmental pollution criticism for being one of the largest source of pollutants dixoin and furan

http://www.ecoinfo.../dioxin_data_e.cfm

Hmmm could you get pretty darn close to there by car?

The Port Mellon Mill (Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Ltd.) is further towards the outlet of the sound and closer to Langdale. The Woodfibre mill (Western) is technically within the boundaries of Squamish and was closed down recently (March I believe).

I'm interested. There has been some discussion about this in the Wraiths forum, in and around the time the mill was closing, with some talk with regard to feasibility of the various routes of attack. Among our obstacles as far as hiking trip would be concerned would be - the lack of a decent trails and the presence of heavy metal contaminants in the water. This is all theoretical, of course, the attempt to catch the last ferry across failed miserably.

A boat is really our best bet, I'm willing to chip in a reasonable amount if you find a contact. Summer's drawing to a close, it is nearly time to usher in the fiery colours and grey skies of fall. We should act quickly while the darkness is still scarce.

If you all dont mind waiting until the second half of the month, I can make the trip as well.
I am VERY interested in going!

As far as trekking through the woods without a trail, trust me it will be far easier than you think. The river is a challenge but with the canoe we can make several trips across the river to accommodate whoever is coming.

Can we refrain from using the official name of the location. we have a map and a sound knowledge of what we are talking about. No reason to let Google find our plan. =)

Perhaps a two day one night type trip? =D

I don't think the hike is the best entry, especially if we stay the night, a few hours hiking in each direction wouldn't be too bad. The camping there for a day is a great idea in my mind, the site looks massive (always looked like a good sized town at night when they lit it up) so the longer the time the better.

As for if its accessible by 4x4, no, no road connects it with the rest of the mainland forestry or otherwise though a road does stretch towards Squamish from the mill but is most likely in horrible condition and overgrown with dense low growth based on other roads in the same map-book(so hiking down it would be likely undoable).

Still no luck on a boat but the canoe across the harbour/river is much easier on me as its possible to transport a canoe much easier than a boat to Squamish. A couple transits across the estuary wouldn't take long to get everything and everybody across.

How does the 23/24th of September sound (sat/sun) for a possible weekend to go?

The 23/24 is perfect for me.

I am a bit trepid about trying to crossing from Britannia Beach in an unpowered canoe, even with a lifejacket; I am not sure I am a proficient enough swimmer to make it to shore if something happens in the middle; but not enough to stop me from trying. =) We should get the tide info though.

I don’t know if you saw these.

I found a site that has some pictures of the site. Its a hiker's photo album on a trip to Henrietta Lake (above and behind the mill a fair ways). She got a couple pictures of the mill before heading upwards.

Site is: http://www.flickr....unner/sets/262213/
A shot of the place at night:
http://www.flickr....llrunner/74830633/

There is a shot or two of train tracks but I think they are for limited use within or near the site as no tracks lead out. She also mentions a dam 1200 feet up the hill which I have seen other references of too. I'm told there was/is a micro-hydro project on the site.

As for tides, on the 23/24 Sept. Tides are:

Saturday 23rd
Low: 0:52
High: 6:52
Low:12:50
High: 18:55

Sunday 24:
Low 1:23
High: 7:36
Low: 13:21
High: 19:10

Could start around 9am we'd be assured of low tides all the way in and could hike the shoreline possibly,
Returning would be harder to dodge a high tide for hiking but could leave around 3 and by high tide be in the canoe and paddling across the river.
