Have you ran into transients that get in the way of your exploration or became threatening to your well being or your photography gears?

How do you deal with them?

I have a few good stories:

1. He yelled at us to leave, I asked if it was really necessary as we were just harmless photographers and waved my camera in the air, he insisted so we agreed to leave (as it didn't seem any point of entry was in the area anyways). While leaving he caught up with us near the exit to "escort us off the property" where he nicely brandished a gun and nunchucks with a very angry disposition. "See you later man!" "You better hope I don't see you again!"

2. We parked in the parking lot, paid and were going for pizza... this offended the local junkies drinking outside the abandoned building which the parking lot shared the property with... and one or two of them decided it would be a fantastic idea to scream at us at the top of their lungs about how much attention we were attracting to their lil' drinking social, we of course defended our actions merely parking in a designated parking lot and thus a screaming match ensued (attracting a lot more attention than us parking our cars). Eventually the argument ended at "Leave!" so we went for pizza (our original intention), while leaving she decided to follow, still screaming........ we ate, she threatened to damage our cars so we called the cops and moved the cars. The other people drinking with her later came up to us an apologized for the inconvenience. Suffice to say, we didn't go into the building......

3. Leaving a location after exploring it we hear some movement near the exit, peering around we see someone darting around in the darkness, he moves towards us and introduces himself, basically he slept there and had arrived some point while we were already inside, fell asleep and we woke him up. Talking with him for a bit we explained we were leaving and what not and he seemed really cool about it, next he kinda directed my attention away where I turned back which gave him ample opportunity to steal the maglite from my hands and swing it about, it was then he realized there was 7 of us in our group and he politely handed the maglite back fearing his own safety, apologizing over and over and insisting we stick around. We left.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

We stashed are bikes behind one building unlocked. Before we started heading up a flight of stairs Im having a bad feeling so we head back. Out the window I see some younger kids lookin at our bikes wondering whether they should take em.
So I yelled "Go grab the shotgun!! What the hell are you motherf5^$ers doin!!"
After this I slammed pieces of wood and stones on the ground for greater effect. The kids ran all except for one... Their was this fat kid with scooter at the treeline. Keep in mind they cant see me, I said calmy "Hey fat body.... You best on run fore I follow you home. Dropped the scooter and ran.

They saw as we rode away on the street but by then it didnt matter.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

This probably doesn't quite count, but my buddy and I were exploring a closed BBQ restaurant. It was spur-of-the-moment so we didn't have our flashlights. There was a large dining room that had no windows and I just took a few shots (with flash) so we could check them out later. When we got home and reviewed the pics, we saw this:

Someone had obviously been living there! Maybe he was out shopping?

This was earlier this year on basically a trip that got me back into this. We ended up going onto the property of the building via going on the property of a small car repair place or something (which is actually attached to this abandoned building it seems). We entered fine, but on the leave, the guy saw us and started whining. I wanted to wait to leave (it was around 5PM so I assumed the place would be closing soon), but the guy I was with wanted to go anyway and sure enough the guy at the car place saw us and pretty much flipped out. Constantly asking were we in those buildings and why and threatening that he would call the police. The guy I was with basically just said "pictures" and turned around to walk back towards the car with me. We pretty much just ignored the guy.

I've run into some "transients" (although I think the ones I've met would rather be called bums, honestly) in various Detroit abandonments. They've always been pretty friendly, usually just wanting to know what time it is, or sometimes wanting to smoke a cigarette with us.

Once when I was coming out of a window of an abandoned diner, I had a bum jump at me and yell "BOO!" Scared the hell out of me. He was harmless though, he just chuckled at my shocked expression and walked away, saying something about peanuts, I think.

yeah not too many homeless people in my area oddly enough... well not living in buildings though... but we did come across an old bar/inn and we hand to enter from the 2nd floor and i knocked something over really loud getting in... good start!
we get in and start takin pictures and see some evidence of homeless but it looks like they havent been there in a while. while were in one of the rooms we hear rustling from across the hall and make the assumption that its a homeless dude but were not bothering him behind the door so we keep going. then upon closer inspection i noticed that ALL the doors (open and closed ones) had "names" written on them in sharpie... such things as "nothing" "fuckface" "butch" etc. and while we were noticfing this we hear that door open sooo slowly with extra creepy creaking noise! and then WHAM!! the door slams back shut. i think the dude must have thought we were some young kids and he tried to make the place sound haunted but he obviously didnt want us there and we also didnt know what was behind the other closed doors! and with all those names written on it we believe we stumbled upon a homeless community! (post pics soon!)

"Discovery is a painful and arduous thing," said the young boy.
"What did you say?" responded the man.
"I said, 'It's my birthday, and I want you to sing.' "
