Magic Eye Security Cameras?
< on 9/2/2006 4:06 PM >

Ok so I googled and searched here for information about these cameras but I couldn't find much info since there's probably another name for them.Basically it's a camera with a glass dome surrounding it.Anyway I'm asking for any information about them.I know there are probably loads of different makes but what are the most common ones like(do they move in relation to movement or are they just controlled, how much detail can they pick up and what's the viewing distance like.)

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but I'm hoping some useful information will be posted about them.

Thanks,
Scummy

A lot depends on the software that is running the cameras. Most camera operators have the ability to create zones within the picture, and if anyone walks into the zone, the camera will immediately focus in on that area. Many fixed location cameras also have this ability, but they are usually tied to an alarm system whereby the motion or door alarm is tripped, and the camera in the area turns on.

Older dome systems are manually moved and zoomed by an operator, or are on automatic pan.

You have to be really careful now. Because of the expense of false alarms, many Police agencies are now asking for visual confirmation of an alarm before they respond. The CCTV feed can be sent to them instantly through a broadband feed. You don't want your face to show up somewhere where it's not supposed to be!

A lot of the times if the camera is covered in a black dome its a dummy camera. They do this a lot in stores such as Wal-mart to stop would be shoplifters. They also make people who are stealing nervous making them easy to spot out.

Don't assume it's a dummy cam though - there's just as good a chance it's real and being monitored. In my company parking lot my boss was coming to work looking for a parking spot when some goof backed out of their spot t-boning my boss's car. Well, through the "magic eye" security was watching and using a joy stick to point the cam at the action and focus in. And, of course, it was all being recorded and clearly provided evidence to the situation when the goof tried to shuffle the blame to my boss. Assume all cameras are actively monitored and take steps to avoid detection.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm pretty sure its a real cam and its monitored since it's in a fairly secure location. It's coupled with a motion sensing light beneath it(you know those cheap spotlight ones that turn on when you move.)The thing is that motion sensing lights are pretty easy to get by just moving slowly but the camera motion sensor might be more sophisticated. So I'm wondering will the camera be able to spot the movement at night.Logically they wouldn't need the light if the camera could spot you at night so I'm assuming you can get by it without being spotted in the dark.Am I right?

The motion sensor may be linked to both light and camera - can also direct camera to the area of alarm - light comes on to give better view from camera.

Not so. I've worked in AP at Target, all our security cameras are covered with black domes, and I can assure you that they are very real.

The black dome is used mainly to give the feeling of a 360° monitoring.

They have a couple of domes actually so I guess they really don't want you in there.I'm not liking these cameras at all so I think I'll probably leave it until closer to the proposed demolishment when they should remove them...I hope.

Thanks Anyway

The thread starter's camera sounds like the real deal.
I call BS to a couple subsequent posts. All or most of the domes out there are not active cameras.
I was a loss prevention manager at a major national US chain for 4 years (all thru college).
We had 16 cameras and 48 domes. While the price of cameras has come down in 6-10 years, it has not come down THAT much.
WalMarts and other big box retailers will throw out 200 fake domes just to give the illusion of security.

Yeah, it depends on if the cams are monitored electronically or by a person. Most electronic systems use a system of infrared, size identification and motion sensors. Most domed cameras will be 180o down arc as well as a 360o pan/zoom setup that allows viewing in all directions. I used to work in a hospital security control center, and we had lots of them. We only really montiored main ones, but the other locations used to blink if they detected heat/motion to catch our attention. There were also a lot of "dummy" domes that we could move camera's to/from with very little difficulty. Not all are real, but the question would be are you winning to risk it? Hope this helps

I know at school they have them, where if its at a hall junction (Say a T) Itll look down one hall for 30 seconds to a 1 min, then the next, then the next, then it restarts. But the fake ones are usually a pitch black, the ones that are real, you can see in them, and kind of see the parts. We did this little thing where we used Binoculars and looked at the camera, from out of it range at the end of the hall. But you should be able to see it, and if you can get under the blind spot or take the wall and do it Metal Gear style, while watching the camera. But the thing i have ran into with that is if the door/doors you were going to go through are locked you can get caught, but here's the best, if you know you can get to a camera blind spot, and you need to pick a door, take some spray paint and spray a little on the lense, that way it's hard for them to see who it is.

I got 4X4 and chains. So if you want to explore that old farm way back in the woods, we can go ;)

Any heavy loose clothing with help to mask body heat, but not enough. And yes the military has specialized clothing that can obscure body heat on infared sensors so it doesnt look like a human body, but these are not your standard issue BDU's and I doubt you can find them.

I have first hand experience installing Security Cameras for twelve years, I can tell you first hand, that Fake cameras are usually INDOORS, and likely any that is outside, is hooked up. If the camera has a smoked plastic dome, you must consider yourself seen at almost any angle. Some newer outdoor cameras have a clear dome, to make night vision more effective, this allows you to visit the site during the day, and with a very good set of military binoculars or a telescope, you can watch the pattern of the lens.

my school is satched with them. i just moved here and this year is the first year to have seniors to graduate from the high school. and i heard the camera system was about 2 million dollars. I also heard it is soo good that it can see lincolns face on a penny if you laid it in the football field, which is a pretty good distance from the campus. then again those are only rumors. im have no other knowledge of them except all my teachers agreed that the monitoring room is no joke like hundreds of screens on like 2 or 3 walls, but with 3000 kids attending 1 highschool it sounds reasonable. but im sure there are many different kinds of cameras with domes over them.

A Paint ball gun will take care of ANY security Camera... just make sure you're not in sight when you open fire, just dont get caught with the weapon, or GSR (err... paint) on your hands and clothing.

That's just PLAIN STUPID.

In fact, that's one of the dumbest thing I have ever read on UER.

Paintballing a security camera will just result in increased security.

stupid.
