If you don't need to wear one, there's no point to wearing one. Extra crap that slows you down, and distracts.

If a site is highly contaminated with airborne hazards best to avoid it as you will need more than just a respirator. It provides very limited protection against hazardous gases, and only for very brief exposure to unsafe levels if adequate 02 is available.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

that is what I am finding out...

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

Time makes the filters harder to breathe thru --- they are paper - water and use degrades them. Generally can get a week a cartridge.

You only use your cartridges for a week? Sure, every cartridge is going to degrade, but certainly not THAT fast. If you take care of your filters and keep them sealed up, you should be able to get way more use out of them than a week.

I have good six months on mine and I'm still on original set. Organic vapor charcoal deactivates if it isn't kept in a sealed bag, but P100 does not degrade appreciably.

They're more than just paper.

I'm pretty sure a p100-only filter is just paper and fabric. The more advanced chemical filters have activated charcoal and other specific chemicals.

I have P3 (UK version of P100) filters made by Scott Safety, and they have almost zero breathing resistance. They only come in 40mm screw-fit though (the standard NATO gas-mask fitting), so you have to wear a sweaty full-face mask to use them unless you know of a half-face mask that takes 40mm screw-fit cartridges. I can't find one for love nor money.

I'm pretty sure it's fancy paper and fancy fabric. I should cut one open after it expires, but that is probably not a good idea.

Cut away, but do it outside. You breath in more crap than you can imagine just in normal day to day life. We evolved in a dirty enviroment, and can safety handle quit a bit.

Chemical filters are used once, according to directions, otherwise they maybe useless. Never reuse if used in chemically contaminated air; the charcoal can release the chemicals if reuse. They provide limited protection even when new.

Particle filters may be reuse unless they become wet. They can be cleaned, by tapping and/or with a shop vac or compressed air, gently. Resistance is a function of particle filtration size, filter surface area and filter material. The finer the particle filtration, the more airflow resistance. Large surface area dual filters are my favorites, for work.

Make sure the one way valve(s) are sealing properly, clean with a wet rag at the sealing area. It's a good idea to occasionally break the mask down to completely to clean it. Do not use solvents.
Always keep an eye on the inside of the mask for fine particles. If present it means either the mask doesn't fit correctly and/or wrong filters or breached filter(s). Special sizes are available for those who have narrow faces. Guys should wear them semi-clean shaven.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Got this from HP tech working w/asbestos, etc - 1 week straight use, moisture degrades them faster - if you seal them in plastic bag between uses yes you can get longer time -- if left out in humid enviroment will degrade and lose effectiveness. If you are going by air resistance you could be beyond effectiveness of filter.
