Re: Shoulder harness bag system for exploring

So, it looks to me, after visiting CL's website, that you bought their larger bag, and now it's too large?

Here's something I don't think anyone has gotten yet. It rides like a SHOULDER HOLSTER, and if you conceal it under your jacket, it looks like a SHOULDER HOLSTER. In some locations, especially on dark, lonely nights, this can get you shot. And you intended to wear this rig under a jacket? If I wore it at all, I'd damn sure want it in bright colors, with flashing lights, preferably with the words "NOT A GUN!" all over the damn thing.

That mentioned, I think the system would be fine, if you used it like it was intended. Their most expensive "2 pouch" models are all under $100. I would use it for "quick access" to my essentials. Maybe keep the rest in a buttpack to my rear. Seriously though, concealed shoulder harnesses? What were you thinking?

I got this for Christmas last year, Lowepro bag.

The bottom compartment has enough room for my DSLR, Film, cheaper digital (won't bring that anymore) and my Film telephoto.

The upper compartment is fairly small and is usually empty, but it holds maps if need be, my palm pilot with map software, flashlight/headlamp, batteries etc.

I usually don't carry that much gear when UEing so i mostly use my
Scott Airstrike 20

It's actually a mtb-backpack but i use it for all sorts of outdoor activities and it's one of the most comfortable daypack-sized Rucksacks i've used so far. It has a built-in Rain cover as well as a helmet-holding-system for bike and climbing helmets.
I guess the 20 liter version is a little low on space, I'm able to fit my softshell-rainjacket in the lower department and a 8mil candela spot, my headlamp plus my climbing/rappeling gear (if i happen to use it) in the upper part, and that's it. The Airstrike30 (guess what, 30 liters instead of 20) should offer enough space for almost all outdoor-activities.

I carry an Israeli paratrooper bag, and it's served me rather well so far- it holds my respirator, 3 D-Cell Maglite, multi-tool, and lots of other accessories. I love this bag to death- it's olive drab, looks cheap, and is made of heavy duty canvas, so it doesn't look out of place anywhere. I'm just a student with a messenger bag to anyone who wants to look. It also has D-rings on the back, so it can turn into a diagonally-slung backpack if the need arises. This is a rugged, tough bag for rural or urban sites. My only quibble is that the divider in the main compartment isn't sewn to the bottom of the bag, thus making the contents migrate a little. I'm going to take a needle and thread to it soon. Really, that's the only fault.

No idea where to get this other than online. I got it free from a relative in the military. God knows where he got an Israeli paratrooper's bag...

well i just got it yesterday and i packed it last night so i have a mini-mag, multitool, some markers, pens, pencils, cellphone and first-aid kit currently packed in it, and i think i will wear it with the cross-strap backpack config, but in the front. I have yet to wear it under a jacket but we have a weekly meet on sunday so i will let everyone know how it worked out for me then

i work with two bags... both of which i love more than anything, and would totally recommend.

1st for small trips to locations i am not a guy who carries alot of shit so this works perfectly for me. i carry this bag with me all the time, everywhere i go i always have everything i need.

But when camping or hiking to a site nothing beats this rucksack. it is totally waterproof tons of pockets, and has been all over the world with me. It is my best traveling buddy.

I love my bags....

i LOVE their stuff. but its expensive as hell. i have a crumper messenger bag sommewhere i used to carry my camera stuff in all the time, but it wasnt really meant to be a camera bag, it had no inserts to hold things. it was really meant to be a laptop bag. but i loved it anyway and it still did a great job protecting my equipment. but now that i have more lenses/gadgets to carry, i need a bag with inserts for keeping things seperate.

I usually take the least amount of gear possible. If I can fit it in my pockets of my pants and jacket, it comes on UE. All I need is a a flashlight, cell phone, camera, and occasionally snacks.

I bought a handy backpack from Wal-Mart that cost me just over $10 with tax. It's very comfortable to wear.

Mostly I just carry my stuff in cargo pockets and coat pockets. Mostly I've been in steam tunnels, and packs and bags really get in the way.
