I like Kodak's 160VC. NC's colors are a little blah, but they can usually be fixed a bit in post. If you want to use reversal, go with Astia. Astia's nice and low-contrast as reversal films go.

Heh, I have the exact opposite opinion - I think VC's oversaturated for a lot of things, especially long exposures by moonlight... Have you tried the two films Fuji recently released to replace NPS/NPC? They're big improvements...

and i suppose since i don't post images and try to get my dick sucked for being a HARDxCORExMEDIUMxFORMATxSHOOTER ... that i never leave my house. whatever. if you really want, i'll go scan the negs from my test roll that i put thru my argus and crop 'em to 1x1 aspect and post 'em. they'll prolly look better, too.

I haven't tried the Pro 160 stuff. Maybe I'll pick some up soon. I don't do a lot of long exposures by moonlight so I can't say what VC is like for that.

touchy aren't we? I didn't mean it like that. I have a RZ67 but I'm not so stuffy to not use something like a kiev either. My point is at least the guy is trying something instead of using some crappy point and shoot that requires little to no brain power. The images may not be top notch, but it's a start. Not everyone can afford the gear, but I don't think they should be punished or ridiculed for it.

no, i just hate the waste of acetate. mostly it stems from irritation with the fetishization of gear / format / medium. i rip on people who shoot holga just the same: why waste so much film on a body/lens combo that can't resolve for shit? at least whatever lens you mount on the mamiya is (hopefully) going to make good use of the larger format; a kiev, you might as well be shooting 110... or a 35mm toy camera. i see no point in running 120 through a piece of trash that will never realize the capabilities of the film that you're putting through it. furthermore, from what i see on ebay, "quality" kiev88's are running $150+. then there's the issue of actually getting a well-maintained copy that worked well in the first place. i just see more luck in shooting a quality 35mm film outfit, or if 6x6 is an absolute must, a yashica TLR, for a starter kit. the russian hassy / leica clones are just getting old (age-wise) and had half-assed QC to begin with, so it's a big giggling point, unless you're just collecting cameras to fix / toy with, in which case, i give two thumbs up. and to levi: as for E6, i didn't see too many shots that needed the latitude. the "with badges" window shot, and the self-port, but i'd rather see blown out slide film than ugly ISO800 120, any day. it also seemed that alot of the shots were trying to take advantage of the even-narrower-DOF that you get with larger formats, which could have been had in 35mm, likely with similar results (after cropping to get that "magical" 1x1 aspect ratio)... with a 50mm 1.4 or 2.0, wide open, and some careful focus work.

yeah, if it's a toss up between those two options, go with the E6 - but a good, fine-grained portrait film will turn out better results than any E6 in 99% of these situations, enlarging admirably to 20X20 and beyond - and especially for those stuck without a really good external meter.

fair enough. i wonder if they make those neat new fuji 160's in 110 format... then i can be a hardXcoreXtransformerXshooter (complete with built-in bipod!):

I disagree... most of these situations are actually pretty low contrast. I wouldnt hesitate to use a high contrast neg film (maybe fuji160C) or slide film. Usually I would recommend pro160s or Reala but pretty anything would handle the flat lighting in these. I think in scanning is where alot of the problems arise as far as color and contrast. No doubt a better camera would help as well. I usually tend to shoot low contrast film anyway just because contrast can always be upped in printing.

| | | I don't see why the average joe who wants to try out medium format needs something super quality and ressy. Are they getting it published? Probably not. Are they going to start having gallery shows? Probably not. I don't think any of this should matter to a hobbyist. And especially if you're just starting to learn about all this stuff. This is the reason I don't tell people any more that I have a degree in photography. Everyone thinks they're some pro photographer whether they're a doctor, lawyer, or janitor. They want to talk gear but rarely actually talk about the images. And they generally turn into nasty know-it-alls, instead maybe it's something that shouldn't be taken that seriously. It takes the joy out of photography entirely.

| | | holy balls i didnt think this would continue. oh well. yeah, kievs are crap, but i think that i get okay results. nothing really exhibit quality, but decent stuff. a lot of sharpness was lost in scanning, but as for contrast, portra just isnt contrasty. i bought a kiev on a whim, didnt spend much on it, so it wasnt a big loss. i never really intended to take it anywhere, just something to play around with. oh, and by the way, i used to have a yashica d. i dumped that thing a while ago. it broke after like three months of use. now that im more comfortable with medium format slr's, i think i will be moving up sometime when i get some more money. probably a bronica, or a mamiya. either way, it will be interesting. i still dont see where youre coming from with the composition attack...
