| | can you shut down video cameras with infrared light? < on 8/19/2006 6:43 PM >
| | | My friends and i have been arguing about this for a while now but none of us have found anything that can prove or disprove this. The idea is that you use a very strong powerful infrared flashlight, they sell these flashlight to be used with nightvision, to knock out a surveillance camera's optics. The idea came frist, from taking a picture of a remote control in use(meaning it was emitting an infrared beam) it blurred the photo so that the photo turned out as a white blur later we learned that some cameras pick up infrared light. This idea became more plausible when we watched the movie "inside man" where bank robbers use infrared light to destroy video camera's optics. This is just a theory, and a weak one at that, but none the less if you know anything about the subject it would help alot if you would share it.

| | | You could blind a camera that was sensitive to IR, but you could also blind it with just about any bright light source, hell, probably even a laser.

| | | Ya... Mr.Coffee is right. Just to add onto what he said: You can blind a camera thats IR sensitive with a strong enough IR light, but thats pretty much all. I really dout it could knock one out. Some camera's also have IR filters in it as well, which will filter out most of not IR light.

| | | A decent quality laser pointer is enough to confuse the auto iris of a camera and temporarily disable it. With sufficient exposure you can actually burn out the CCD or CMOS image sensor. I can't think of many flashlights that could do this. Even the most powerful spotlights are probably not enough. A laser is very focused but the can be many times brighter than the sun.

| | | I've tried using a very high end laser pointer on a quality surveillance camera and no go. Caera still works after laser is gone. The laser does distort the picture enough though while it is pointed directly in to the iris. From the sides allows a good tech to still pull pictures from the frames. 99.99% of the people that UE will never have the proper equipment to spoof a camera anyway. The only way I was able to do any of this was because of work. Dave

| | | Back when I was playing unreal tournament a lot, I decided to change my handle, but couldn't come up with anything, so I looked around the room, and saw a coffee maker. And yes, I like coffee, I get quite irritable when there is too much blood in my caffeine stream. on that note, does anybody else gauge the strength of their coffee by how much emphasis they put on the word?
