| | | | | | For all of you UE Techy's... Your UE *TECH* Gear Lists < on 8/18/2006 9:19 PM >
| | | Ok... I know a fair share of you are real computer geeks, like myself... What type of Tech gear do you bring with you guys?
Here's Mine: AMD 64 3400+, 1gb Ram, 80GB Hard drive Dual Boots Windows XP and Ubuntu. Has Built in Lowjack (for if it gets stolen). I also have every cable you might need with me, along with a multi media card reader, 3 512mb thumb drives, burnable CD's, and DVD's. I also have a 400w inverter for the car to run it off of. My Cell phone acts as a stand alone GPS unit (lgvx8300 with VZ Navigator) and can also be hooked up to my laptop to use as a GPS, AND a wireless Broadband modem... SO when i'm out in the middle of nowhere in my car, I can talk to you guys on UER. BTW.... The laptop NEVER leaves my car. And my car is alarmed pretty damn well, not to mention i keep the case under my seat where no-one can see it.
What type of stuff do you guys carry??

| | | I've used my laptop to store maps to locations. I have also brought it along when I anticipate taking large numbers of photos, it comes in handy when my memory cards are full. However when I do bring it, it stays in the car.

| | | my server is a Dual xeon 2.4ghz with 4 gig of ram with a .5TB raid 5. in the rack is another 2TB raid 5, on the desk are two 19" crts, and 10' screen that's lit by a proxima dp 9290. don't ask about the home theatre, it's similarily oversized. oh yeah, that's running off an apc ups, it'll power the whole system for four hours (I have a bank of deep cycle batteries behind the screen)

| | | My room full of tech goodies:
The computers are mostly Pentium 3 workstations, though there's an Athlon living in the Dell case under my workbench. The frankenstein looking thing is my web server and the others are just for whatever else. At home I've got another Athlon box for gaming and a Thinkpad T22 follows me around. Aside from the computers, there's a whole host of audio gear, radio stuff, more tools than you can shake a stick at, and parts of all kinds of bizzare equipment. A lot of stand up arcade and pinball machines in another room too, but those are my dad's, I just work on them occasionally. [last edit 8/20/2006 10:59 PM by eidolon - edited 1 times]

Yeah, Didn't really expect to hit 2.5 tb, but newegg had one hell of a deal on the drives and the card (ran me just about $1.5k for the 2tb array) as for tape, i've thought about getting a cheap DLT system or something, but honestly even I'm starting to see the overkill at this point. I torrent a lot, so I burn most stuff off to DVD anyway, I figure I should be ok, esp since my main system drive is a two-disk Raid 0(i didn't include that 'cause it's just a pair of 20 gigers for the O.S).
as for the laptop, Just get the amount of money you're willing to spend and cruise ebay untill you see a deal you like. it might take a couple of weeks, but i'm pretty sure you'll get one eventually. you can also check for flyers around your local college campus. | | | Wait a moment. Some of you bring LAPTOPS on missions? Why the heck would you need something like that? As I see it, anything more than the basics just slows you down. I don't carry more techie gear than a small camera and cell phone--and I even ditch the phone when I'm underground or otherwise out of service. Even occasionally leave the camera. Carrying high-tech equipment just seems stupid to me. The possibility of breaking it, having it stolen, or confiscated by police/security is a big risk and not worth the payoff. </twocents>

| | | Exploring?
- Canon 350D sporting 17-35mm or 17-50mm lens
- Gloves (because I hate getting goo on my hands and then touching my camera, hello OCD)
- Flashlight (mostly)
If I'm going on a UE trip I'll bring a laptop to download photos to, but it waits in the car or wherever I'm staying. That's just a toy, Centrino 1.8 GHz dual boot XP and Ubuntu, 80 gig HD. Waiting at home? AMD Opteron 165, 2 gigs RAM (soon to be 4 when I get around to opening it up again), 300 gig HD, dual boot XP and Gentoo. My 2 computers and my boyfriend's computer will soon be connected to my old desktop, which is being transformed into a server running Gentoo. Sweetest Linux distro around.

| | | here are all the personal boxes. not including the work ones (just finished a build on a dual opteron at the office!) even tho i want to, they dont technically belong to me. c0re.(domain_removed) OS: Gentoo Linux CPU: Intel 1.13Ghz Pentium 3 (the 'A' series, w the tulatin core) RAM: 640MB SDRAM hda: 20GB maxtor slimline IDE (/) hdb: 120BG maxtor IDE (/home) hdc: Plextor Plexwriter 8/12/32 sda: maxtor 230BG IDE (/var/ftp) services: samba, xVNC, httpd, ssh, sftp on multi-homed network (private, public), but not used for routing. ive got it attached to a linksys router on one interface, and a 3x3 cable modem on the other. this system is mainly used for storage and remote access via ssh and xVNC. omega.(domain_removed) OS: Gentoo Linux CPU: Intel 3.0Ghz (dual core) RAM: 512 DDR hda: 60GB Maxtor IDE (/) services: ssh, sftp, httpd, mysqld. also has several client-side programs running constantly. used as a testbed for new apps, and some development/testing of new system control scripts. this system is on our administrative LAN at the office. maul OS: windows 2000 CPU: amd x86_64 3000+ RAM: 1024MB DDR sda: maxtor 120GB SATA hdb: Plextor Plexwriter 52/24/52 hdc: AOpen DVD reader Services: none. mainly used for accessing other systems remotely, and gaming. draco (Dell Lattitude D810) OS: windows xp/gentoo linux cpu: 1.7Ghz pentium M RAM: 1GB DDR sda: 80GB Toshiba SATA services: none. client side only. used when im on the road, doing wireless auditing, doing repairs, or testing network equipment. some accessories: confier quad antenna, orinoco 801.11b silver, 2M n-cable. other stuff: Linksys wireless B/G 4 port router cascaded thru a 3 port Linksys VoIP/SIP router (keeps the wired and unwired nets seperate). i keep meaning to set up an actual sip phone for testing, but i never seem to get around to it. there are also three other laptops; one that ive given to my wife to use, and two more that are now antiquated (but stuff functional!) i do often take the laptop with me when i go out just out of habit. it usually ends up staying in the trunk of the car.
