I found these books at Barnes and Noble, but just recently noticed if you get them at amazon they give you a little bonus deal. They are the best things I've seen so far for identifying what you're looking at, dating mines from artifacts, and that thing. Mining Camps Speak has lots of photos and is an easy read, Riches to Rust is a tougher read with more historical drawings than photos. I recommend them both though. If you've found better, please let me know.

Oh, these are mostly for western gold mines, rather helpful for those in Colorado.
